Good Supplement

I took approximately a month and a half to study for the CISSP. I started off using this book. I read it from cover to cover doing the end of chapter exams and exercises. I found the book to be well put together as are most of the sybex books. I also watched the free cybrary videos and took every practice exam i could get my hands on. The book is a good supplement to a layered study approach. I wouldn't recommend just reading the book and taking the exam.

My primary criticism would be with the supplemental tests provided. Unlike the traditional CD or download, this book provides access to a web based test engine. The interface doesn't allow you to bookmark a question and go back to it later, your session will time out and you'll be logged off it you sit idle too long. I found both of these to be very frustrating as it can be next to impossible for a person like me to be able to carve out hours at a time to dedicate to practice exams.

That being said i feel the book is worth purchasing and reading. Good luck i hope this helped.

**Edit 1/11/16 Since the publisher has fixed the issues with the supplemental tests and now provided a pdf copy of the book i have changed my rating from 4 stars to 5. Just this book and I passed the exam first try!

This book was the only book I purchased when it came out just a few months ago for the CISSP.

I studied from only this book. I had a very minimal background in networking.. but substantial knowledge of programming and years of experience programming professionally. The test took me 4 hours and I did pass the first try.

How I used this book:

1. First time I read the book I did two chapters of reading per week. The first time through reading I gathered all of the high level concepts from the book. I was not reading for extreme detail because my brain could not possibly remember so much. I also avoided all practice questions. (I find that if you do questions right after reading naturally you will do well... you just read it!)

2. The second time I went through the book I took a notebook and wrote down every "Exam Essential" item from the end of each chapter onto a piece of paper along with the chapter it was from. Exam Essentials is the special section where the author has taken the time to highlight all of the things he thinks you MUST know to take the test. He wrote one for each chapter and this is where this book is awesome. If I didn't understand one of the Exam Essential items I went to that chapter and read in extreme detail about the concept and took notes so I would not have to look it up again.

3. So I had my notebook with about 30 pages of notes, (there are about 21 chapters so each chapter was a page or so) using long term memory tricks I memorized every single page of my notes. The trick I used was walking around my apartment (in my mind) and visually associating things with the test. (Each step of my staircase became a layer in the OSI model and I envisioned the technology for that layer sitting on the step as an example. Memory professionals who memorize decks of cards use association all the time. Please take some time on Google and learn how to do this kind of memory work. It will benefit you greatly in school and life in general if you learn to do this.) The author already told me what I had to know.. so I made sure I memorized it.

4. During the last phase I simply did all the practice questions the author provided both in the book and on their website. If I didn't know something I made a note. At the end of all the thousands of test questions I had another 2 or 3 pages of notes to add to my memory. On another note I did one practice exam a day to be sure I could not remember questions because of the sheer volume of them. Then I waited 10 days and did all the practice exam questions again... guess what? I could not remember the questions and it felt like all new tests again. Great way to reinforce the concepts by doing the exams more than once.

I took the test in January 2016. I marked the questions I was not sure on and did all the questions I was fairly certain on first. This took two hours. Then I went through and did all the questions I was not so sure on for two more hours. The feeling I had during the exam was one of dread. The questions felt like they were written by a lawyer and required an intense concentration to even understand what they were asking. At one point I told myself I can always try again and read another book if I failed. The practice questions were tricky in this book but they are not written the same strange way as the real exam in my opinion. Anyways I did pass the test. I was quite happy!

So do I recommend the book? Absolutely! It was enough for me to pass first try in 4 hours.

Paper vs. Kindle vs. Sybex Online Content vs. Real CISSP Exam

I bought both the Kindle and paper versions of this book. I'm weird like that. If you don't want to read my really long review I summarize as get the Kindle version, read the entire thing, take advantage of the Sybex online content (sample tests) and that should be enough to pass.

I should note I have about 15 years of experience as a jack-of-all-trades UNIX admin and I have been working specifically in security for about 3 years. I had a really good foundation but I learned a LOT from this book.

CISSP EXAM COMMENTS

I liked the book. I learned a lot from it. I read the entire book. I took all the chapter questions (I always waited a day or two after reading the chapter so I could get a better idea on what I really learned). I took all four sample exams after reading the entire book. I passed my CISSP exam on 2/17/2016 and I felt like almost everything I needed to know was in the book. There were a few questions that I don't think the book covered but I felt like they were practical things that a security engineer would already know.

My primary comment concerning the book and the chapter questions and practice exams is that most of the provided questions are fairly straightforward. When taking the real exam, I found the questions notably more difficult because I often had to read the question a second (or third!) time to really understand what was being asked. I took all four practice exams as if they were real exams. I completed all four in under two hours each and scored 78%, 82%, 84% and 89% (I think the final test was the easiest of the four). The real CISSP exam took me about 3.5 hours and all I know is that I passed. TAKE YOUR TIME. READ EVERY QUESTION CAREFULLY. READ ALL THE ANSWERS AND AFTER YOU PICK ONE, REREAD THE QUESTION TO MAKE SURE YOUR ANSWER STILL SOUNDS GOOD. It's not a race or a contest. What matters is that you pass it and don't have to pay for a retake!

Every CISSP exam is a bit different but I found mine hit a couple areas really hard (SDLC specifically) but the practice exams just barely touched on them. It is important to read the entire book.

KINDLE VERSION

I did about 80% of my reading in the Kindle app on an iPad and in general I prefer my iPad over paper books these days (portability and low light reading). In the case of this book, there is a lot of formatting that is lost in the Kindle version. The Kindle tends to squish whitespace and indents and such so some of the visual layout just becomes text. This is the first technical book I have used Kindle for and though I did 70% of my reading there, I was not fully satisfied with it. Another annoyance on the Kindle was that the TOC drop down interface only had the chapter heads and no easy jump to a specific subsection. Some of these chapters are about 80 pages which is like 200 swipes on an iPad mini. It does support all the awesome things you expect from Kindle like bookmarks and highlights and such. I used highlights to mark things I knew I wanted to review multiple times like the big encryption algorithm comparison table and some of the model definitions or process summaries.

PAPER BOOK

The paper book is a goddam tome. For fun I like to drop it loudly on my desk and say "THIS is what I am working on." I loved the experience of reading the paper book compared to the Kindle version but I only spent about 10% of my time on the paper book because of the size. It was difficult to transport and I could not easily read it in bed or reclining. The paper is very thin which did not bother me but may bother some. I can't imagine how large and heavy it would be if they did't use such thin paper. I really love paper books but considering the size of this one I think I have to recommend you skip it unless you really really just want paper or you really really want this on your shelf as a trophy and/or a warning unto others.

SYBEX ONLINE MATERIAL

The Sybex online material is a mixed bag. You can access the material using information in the introduction of either version of the book. One awesome feature is that after you are registered and verified your purchase you can download a PDF version of the book. This is what I spent the other 20% of my time reading. The PDF version is a tough read on an iPad mini but more manageable on a full size iPad or MBA and it looked great on my 24" monitor. The PDF version has a really nice TOC in the sidebar with all the subsections marked and that feature really underscored one of the big shortcomings of the Kindle version. The PDF also has all the perfectly excellent formatting that the paper book includes. I, uh, didn't know I could download the PDF when I bought the paper book or I probably would not have bought the paper book.

The Sybex online material also includes electronic versions of all the chapter tests. The web interface is a little clunky on this but it works. A complaint about the chapter tests is that they do not randomize. The 20 questions after each chapter are always in the same order. This becomes painfully apparent if you select several chapters but only want (AKA have time for) a limited number of questions. Early on I selected the first three chapters but limited the question count to 20 and what I got was all 20 Chapter 1 questions in the order they appear in the book (sigh). This online resource is nice but it could have been so much better.

The Sybex online material also includes four 250 question practice exams. This seems like a pretty awesome bonus and it is nice but the interface for the exams is slightly different from the chapter tests. You can bookmark a question but there is no way to go back to a previous question and review or change your answer. In the online help is says this is a feature to mimic the actual CISSP exam which generates a giant WTF from me. This is another resource which is nice but could have been awesome. To add insult to injury there is a timeout on the web page that can kick you out. I am guessing it is a two hour timeout but my method is less than scientific. I finished all practice exams in under 120 minutes but while I was reviewing my wrong answers on two of the exams I got a session timeout which kicked me out and reset my exam. In both cases I was in the result summary screen and closed it to go back to the test review screen. I theorize that as long as you are in the review screen you won't have problems but there is some sort of session check when you transition. I said it wasn't scientific.

The online material also includes a glossary which I will probably review before taking the exam and set of online flashcards which I don't plan to use because I'm just not a flashcard guy. I may end up regretting that of course.

Unlike olives, Psmith is not an acquired taste!

If you own 10 Wodehouse books, this should be one of them. For years I have been a huge fan of the farcical Bertie & Jeeves stories. This book also throws some romance and a touch of mystery into the brew. Be careful that you are not in public or that you are not in the middle of having a drink when you reach page 198, because I am warning you - you will erupt into a fit of freakish laughter which probably won't subside for another 5 or 10 minutes, with intermittent relapses thereafter.
The eccentric and congenially self-absorbed Wodehousian hero of this novel is Psmith - pronounced with a silent P as in Ptarmigan (he finds that his birth name, Smith, is just too boring). Although he holds a membership to London's six most exclusive clubs and never a wrinkle or misplaced crease did find its way into his impeccable attire, he finds himself in dire financial straits. To make it worse, while lounging in the smoking-room window of the Drones Club, he instantly falls in love with a passing young dainty - but he has no idea how to introduce himself into her society.
Yet there might be a solution to his problems through the ad for work-wanted that he recently placed in the Morning Globe. In the caption he expresses the sentiment that he will take on any job whatever (including assassinating Aunts) except for anything relating to fish. You have a problem? "Leave it to Psmith!"
He ends up impersonating a well-known Canadian poet in order to introduce himself onto the guest list at beloved Blandings Castle, presided over by the eminent Lord Emsworth. While there he must steal a diamond necklace from under the tireless eye of The Efficient One - Emsworth's flower-pot-wielding secretary Baxter. Enjoy!

The best of the Psmith series

"Leave it to Psmith" concludes the evolution of the Psmith character, from Wodehouse's earliest style of writing with the "Schools" genre, to a comic character whose dialogue keeps the reader entertained throughout. This story sees Psmith enter into Blandings Castle, and though Lord Emsworth is not the dominant character he later becomes, flashes of brilliance are visible in his appearances (and in those of Lady Constance, who plays an important role in this book).
"Leave it to Psmith" is packed full of witty dialogue, readily suited to Psmith's character, and the traditional Wodehouse farce for the plot (misunderstandings, a stolen necklace, and so forth). The ending is predictable, of course, but this is hardly the point. It is the use of language that makes this such an enjoyable tale. Wodehouse connoisseurs all have their own favourite phrases, or particular sections of books that strike them as humorous from the prolific collection of Wodehouse's works. Suffice to say, several of my personal favourite sections appear in this book - Psmith at the employment agency, or describing his career as a fishmonger spring to mind. Those who enjoy the Blandings or Jeeves and Wooster series would do well to read this book.

The First Potty Doings at Blandings Castle

Leave It to Psmith (pronounced "Smith") is the first P.G. Wodehouse novel about Blandings Castle and its inmates, Clarence, ninth earl of Emsworth, his daunting sister, Lady Constance Keeble and Beach, the butler. Fans of later Blandings Castle tales will be a little puzzled by this one. Clarence is obsessed with flowers and gardening rather than pigs. The Empress of Blandings is nowhere in sight. And the main plot catalyst is Psmith, that remarkable public school character from the early Wodehouse novels, rather than Galahad Threepwood or Uncle Fred.

Although this is not the best of the Blandings Castle tales, it has one of the best plots and does an effective job of introducing the ongoing characters and jokes. The interrelationships of the characters in the past and present are remarkable for their complexity and present lots of deja vu scenes.

Psmith and Clarence are two of Wodehouse's finest creations and the central joy of this book is found in their extended interactions.

As usual, love and money are at the bottom of the plot. Psmith cannot bear to be in the fish business any longer and advertises that he will do anything -- even commit a crime -- to get a change of pace. Clarence's son, Freddie Threepwood, contacts Psmith and asks him to help with an inside-the-family theft of his aunt's necklace. Although his uncle is rolling in the stuff, Lady Constance keeps him on a short leash. Freddie's uncle will give her another necklace like the one that's "stolen" and use the money to help Freddie and his uncle's step-daughter Phyllis. Freddie needs the money to attract a bride and Phyllis needs to help her new husband get a start on life.

Like the other Blandings Castle stories, the castle is full of imposters. Psmith himself is posing as a poet, but is constantly being unmasked by those who choose to keep his secret for a time.

Complications come when Psmith finds himself falling in love with a young woman whom he spies outside the Drones Club needing an umbrella. The young woman turns out to be on her way to Blandings Castle as well. It also turns out that Freddie has been proposing to her, but hasn't worn her down yet. Who will win the fair maiden?

The book has some of the funniest scenes in it that you can imagine involving flower pots. It's an inspired beginning to the many jokes that follow in later books about potty people residing at Blandings Castle.

Thalken explores how physics can be applied to martial arts.More than a body of facts, Thalken sees physics as a practical discipline: an approach that can be applied to any number of pursuits. His chosen pursuit is martial arts. As in physics, the author says, no authority or status can make a martial artist's technique effective. Testable and reproducible results hold all the power. His thesis is that by understanding the way the human body moves and balances, a martial artist can gain the upper hand on opponents who do not approach their sport scientifically. Thalken outlines the way concepts from physics reveal strategies in fighting―the center of mass is important for leg sweeps and grappling, hits that travel shorter distances will arrive with greater force and speed, etc. He also debunks common misconceptions about equipment. For example, boxing gloves are not “safer” than bare knuckles; while they distribute force over a wider area, causing fewer breaks in the skin, they allow the fist to strike with more momentum and hit hard surfaces (like the head) more frequently. He also delves into many of the myths propagated by media portrayals of martial arts as well as the pseudoscience propagated by practitioners of martial arts themselves. A relatively short book, the work is more primer than instruction manual, advocating a perspective as opposed to promoting individual exercises or training regimens. There is an infectious energy to Thalken's prose, one that sells both the no-nonsense combat analysis and the cool skepticism of the physics discussion. As a guidebook, the text has very little fat: section titles like, “Where Is My Center of Mass, and Why Do I Care?” keep readers assured Thalken isn't trying to force more information on them than needed. The author is an apt communicator of even the more abstract ideas, putting them into a simple, intuitive context. Fight Like a Physicist is a cool concept that makes physics tangible for fans of fighting sports.As a martial arts practitioner with a doctorate in physics, Jason Thalken has an interesting perspective on fighting sports, and he applies his knowledge of scientific principles to his chosen sport in Fight Like a Physicist. Though there probably isn't quite enough material here for a full book, the early sections do a solid job explaining the physics in a relatable way that gives fighters some perspective on how to incorporate scientific knowledge to fight better.Fight Like a Physicist finds a nice middle ground in terms of the material's tone ―the writing is simple enough for its target audience to understand and apply, while it still delivers meaningful scientific concepts. For example, the book uses levers as a way to explain the relationship between distance and force, and explains how the dispersal of force on impact can make particular blows more or less effective.Thalken includes numerous charts and graphs throughout the book. Like many of the concepts he writes about, these visual representations will look familiar to anyone who took physics in high school, but may not have thought about the material since then. He throws in the occasional “math box,” to highlight mathematical concepts like the force curve or the center of mass, while using both equations and sample fight-based scenarios. Combined, these elements make Fight Like a Physicist both a useful primer and an enjoyable refresher.Though the early chapters are strong, the book does lose its way a bit late, with chapters that seem shoehorned in. Thalken includes a chapter about brain injuries affecting football players (including Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy), and posits a theory about how applied force might manifest in such injuries. However, the author also has a patent pending on a new helmet―which he discloses honestly, but which does make an already tangential chapter feel like a sales pitch at times.Other sections criticize practices like tai chi for their lack of scientific basis, or advocate fighting back against criminals in dangerous real-life situations, but these parts feel unnecessary, and the tone deviates from the book's strengths. They don't quite fit the fighting-sports theme, and the science in these chapters is less than clear cut, especially when compared to the universal principles discussed earlier.At its best, in the early chapters, Fight like a Physicist is a cool concept that makes physics tangible for fans of fighting sports, and can just as easily get more science-minded readers interested in those sports. Jason Thalken has a PhD in computational condensed matter physics from the University of Southern California, and bachelor's degrees in physics, mathematics, and philosophy from the University of Texas. He is the inventor on eight patent applications for data science and modeling in the financial services industry, and one patent application for protecting the brain from trauma in such sports as boxing, MMA, and football. Jason has studied and competed in numerous martial arts styles since 1995 and has a black belt in hapkido under Grand Master Ho Jin Song. Jason Thalken resides in Seattle, Washington.

Applying Newtonian physics to self-defense or the ring

When I saw this book’s title, I imagined a bloodied and battered Poindexter in a bow-tie--a professorial type dying in a puddle of his own bodily fluids as he calculated the Bayesian probability of winning given that initial beating. After all, physics is a highly cerebral activity, and being cerebral in a fight is a certain path to a beat down. However, Thalken makes a good point with his explanation of the title (and the book’s theme.) He’s suggesting that one use tactics and techniques that are supported by evidence and rooted in a sound understanding of the science of combat—as opposed to mindlessly doing whatever your sensei tells you or--worse yet--just muddling through on a combination of instinct and ignorance. In short, be skeptical, but inquiring. It turns out that there is a time for a fighter to be cerebral, but it’s when they are making decisions about how to train.

The book is divided into two parts. The first part explains how classical mechanics can help one to be a better fighter. There are four chapters in this section that deal with center of mass and its crucial role in a fight, the differences between high momentum and high energy strikes and how each is achieved, differences in circular versus linear paths and where the advantage in each lies, and what simple machines (i.e. levers and wedges) can do for a fighter. This section is what one would expect from such a book. Unlike the second section, which deals largely with sport fighters, the advice on offer in the first section is as applicable to those involved in self-defense or other real world combative situations as it is to fighters in the ring.

The second section examines the issue of concussions and brain damage in some detail, including consideration of the degree to which gloves and headgear do—or don’t—make one safer. The reader gains great insight into the mechanics and neuroscience of a knockout. While the majority of the section offers advice for those engaged in combative sports, the last two chapters take a bit of a turn. The first of these two deals with the myths perpetuated by Hollywood—which, let’s face it, is the source of most people’s information on what combat is. Debunking the notion that a person who gets shot is always and everywhere instantly incapacitated is a central theme this chapter. The last chapter deals with the issue of pseudoscience in the martial arts, and the insanity of believing one can defeat an opponent with chi (also qi, or—in Japanese Romanization--ki) or mind power alone. These last two chapters seem like a turn from the main theme of the book, but they do stay under the umbrella of the martial arts through a scientific lens.

While this is a book about science, it’s readable even for an educated non-scientist. All the math is put in boxes that the reader can opt to skip, or to follow, depending upon his or her comfort level with equations. There is no complex jargon, nor any incomprehensible concepts. The physics is largely high school level Newtonian mechanics.

Diehard believers in the supernatural or pseudo-scientific conceptions of the universe should be warned that this isn’t the book for you unless you like your sacred cows flame-broiled. You won’t learn about chi (qi) in this book except to be reminded that it’s a make-believe concept.

I’d recommend this book for those who are interested in how science can be applied to the martial arts or human movement more generally. It’s short, readable, and offers some interesting food for thought.

You don’t need to be an expert if you can fight like a physicist.

Martial arts can seem like an illusion.

Take, for instance, the competition I saw at the U.S. Open in 2007 in Orlando. A martial artist, a black belt I presumed to be in his 40s, lifted up a plank full of nails and punctured a bottle of water with it. As the water spread out on the floor, he put the plank down and stepped on it. I cringed as I watched the nails all but pierce his feet while he demolished a stack of bricks as tall as a child.

Neither act - standing on nails or breaking bricks - is as strenuous as it seems, says Dr. Jason Thalken, author of his first book, How To Fight Like A Physicist.

Regarding the bed of nails, he says that “any person is capable of performing this trick right now with no training.” He explains how surface area distribution prevents the nails from piercing the skin. Turning to the bricks, he says it wouldn’t work if the bricks were spaced incorrectly. He details how bricks are broken due to how they are bent.

This is just one example of how Thalken breaks through martial arts mysticism.

The meat of the book, in my view, lies in the middle. Thalken discusses the issue of how brain damage occurs from sparring and MMA fights, and even suggests that, in some cases, the more protection we think we have from head injuries (through the use of face cages, for example), the more we may actually be at risk for them.

Just because Thalken is a new author doesn’t mean he lacks knowledge. The Ph.D., holder of three bachelor’s degrees, and holder of eight patents has filed a patent for a new type of headgear to protect against brain injuries in the hopes of preventing chronic traumatic encephelopathy (CTE), also known as “punch drunk syndrome,” in martial artists and fighters. CTE is caused by repeated blows to the head, and autopsies of athletes in boxing, football, and pro wrestling have revealed evidence of CTE.

The only other book I’m aware of that discusses science at this much depth in a martial arts book comes from The Secrets of Judo, but that book doesn’t address head injuries because that’s not the purpose of judo. Activities like boxing, sparring, and MMA all include the head as a target, and even a prime target.

Despite his expertise, Thalken says “you don’t need to be an expert if you can fight like a physicist.”

i once stood in a library and listened to a conversation between a libarian and a guy in his 40s he had asked the week b4 for a serious read a classic and she had apparently recomended metamorphosis by franz kafka it was stupid he said angrily all about some bloke who turns into a cockroach.well if you dont know what a metaphor is dont buy this book.however if you can stand having your face rubbed in the reality of sexual abuse and the way our society is complicate both by our elevation of abusers to the posistion of outlaws "bad men and women" and the way the media uses these crimes to titilate the public in the guise of information you will be wiser and sader 4 the experiance

just compare the glory hole massage parlour sex with the carrot and stick sexuality the media sells to us and the purile articles from the press with the more honest but equally repugnent child porn exchanged in dark hallways

truly our children have inherited the world we deserve.

lydia lunchs paradoxia is well worh reading before or after as a companion piece but both will show you things about yourself you would prob rather not know.

Sotos' best since Total Abuse

I wish I could reproduce my full review of this book here, but it's longer than a thousand words and besides, it violates all kinds of terms that Amazon has set for its reviews. Sotos gives us the goods about the Sensation art exhibit, King Ian and Queen Myra, the back rooms of adult bookstores, prostitution in Chicago, you name it. It's all here, and it's all captured beautifully in its hazy, base, disgusting glory. Sotos writes about a part of society that few people are even aware of, and if they were aware of it, they'd probably wish they weren't. And that's where the power and importance of Sotos' writing lies, in the confrontation of discovering about parts of life you didn't know existed before.

This is probably the worst thing I have ever read. It's basically just Sotos' nonsensical, meanderings on child pornography and homosexuals using glory holes, interspersed with quotes from newspaper articles about child abductions and what not. I'm not sure what effect this is supposed to have on the reader, but I was pretty much just bored by it. It feels like just a bunch of random words about pedophilia and other disturbing subjects thrown together, with nothing really holding them together to give the reader something to focus his attention on. I expected this book to be disturbing. It wasn't. It was tedious. I couldn't help but skim over much of it. Upon finishing this book most people will ask themselves like I did "what was the point?" and "Can I have my (expletive deleted) money back?" Avoid this book like you'd avoid condomless intimacy with Magic Johnson.
