John Hedley Brooke held the Andreas Idreos Chair of Science and Religion and Directorship of the Ian Ramsey Centre at Oxford University from 1999 to 2006. He is currently President of the International Society for Science and Religion.

Numbers is Hilldale Professor of the History of Science and Medicine and of Religious Studies and a member of the department of medical history and bioethics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he has taught for over three and a half decades. He is Past President of the International Union of History and Philosophy of Science.

This is a good overview of the history of the interaction of science and religion for the general reader. Most of the chapters are, understandably, on the Western religions (Christianity, Judaism, and Islam). There is also a very good chapter on China and an informative (at least to me) on Africa. But I am taking away one star because the chapters on Buddhism and India are rather weak. If you are particularly interested in the interaction of science and religion in Hinduism and Buddhism, this is not the book for you.

• Updated chapter on B-cell immune responses (Chapter 10), especially on trafficking of B cells in peripheral lymphoid organs (e.g. lymph nodes) and the locations at which they encounter antigen.
• Coverage of mucosal immunity (Chapter 12) has been brought up to date, including responses to the commensal microbiota and the role of specialized dendritic cells and the regulatory T cells in maintaining tolerance to food antigens and commensal bacteria.
• Chapter 13, Failures of Host Defense Mechanisms, has been reorganized and revised to structure an understanding of primary immunodeficiencies in the context of developmental pathways.
• Chapter 16, Manipulation of the Immune Response, has been heavily revised to include a greater emphasis on clinical issues and a complete update of immunotherapeutics and vaccines.
• Many new and revised figures illustrate the processes and mechanisms underlying the concepts presented in the text.
• The icons used have been updated and expanded to incorporate a new emphasis on signaling pathways.

An updated classic that doesn't quite live up to its reputation

The original volumes of Janeway were deservedly considered classics. They disrupted the paradigm of texty, word-heavy tomes in favor of refreshingly simple, comprehensive, coherent diagrams. This latest volume does include many of the diagrams I remember but they're no longer central to the text.

I actually read my first copy of Janeway cover to cover in about a week - that's how great it was. I will use this latest version as a reference, but the greatness has been lost under the sheer weight of dry text. This feels like a book that was written by committee with an eye on incorporating information rather than teaching this fascinating subject to eager students.

It's probably still better than most of the other immunology texts out there, but it's no longer an autobuy for me.

A lot of information, but weird presentation

I was heavily reliant on this book for an immunology course I took as an elective, and while I am impressed by the amount of research and effort that went into this textbook, I wasn't impressed by the presentation of the content. Sure, this book is very detailed, and its scientific journal-like diction helped me a lot when it came down to reading scientific literature, but the material was written in a very convoluted way. It seemed like this was meant for a group of students who were already versed in the topic of immunology,somewhat, and not for people who like me were new to the subject. In some chapters the book would begin talking about one system, move on another system and then loop back around to the first system. Chapter divisions were really nice and so were the summaries because it is very hard to skim over this text to review or look for pertinent information. Some information that took 3 pages to explain were was already evident in a preceding diagram, and could have been summarized onto a single page. I definitely learned a lot from reading the book and the illustrations were great, but I felt that getting through a 50 page chapter took a lot of caffeine and will power- that stuff is dense!

Detailed, good figures but brutal to read

This is the required text for my Immunobiology class. As I slogged through the first chapter, which was a very detailed overview of the immune system I hoped that the going would get easier when I got to the chapters on the individual components of the immune system. Second chapter: still very tough going. This book goes into a lot of detail and has some great figures and micrographs that help display the material. The two main problems is that with so much detail it's "hard to see the forest for the trees". The main points are obscured in a flood of details. The other problem is that the authors tend to jump around a lot. Often you read, "we will discuss this later in the chapter" and they jump to another topic. Really kills the flow and makes it tough to keep at it. So at this point I'd say it's taking about one evening to read 10 pages. The 70 page chapter on the innate immune system didn't get read for my next class. In summary, all the information is there, somewhat obscured by a flood of details. Expect to spend a long time grinding through if you're trying to learn the material with this book.

Has some problems

I would have to agree with one of the other reviews here. Although it is well written most of the time, there are some mistakes. As of this writing I'm only through Chapter 1, so I can't speak for the rest of the book. Read on for some problems with this first chapter.
In the examples given by the authors they use commands that have not yet been introduced. While you can guess what the commands purpose is the authors should have explained it before they used it. Another problem is with the challenges in the first chapter. While the first four challenges are possible, the fifth is not if all your understanding is garnered from the first chapter. They ask you to write a program that is impossible to write without having read deeper into the book, specifically you need to use the 'if' command to write it. I also noticed while looking at the answer to this challenge in the appendix that there was a bug large enough that it would not have compiled if I had copied it.
Overall, from my experience with the first chapter, it's good, but be prepared to bang your head when the authors don't explain something.

Fundamentally flawed as a package

I have just started working with the book and while it seems fine and straightforward thus far, the package is flawed at a very basic level. The accompanying CD contains quite a bit but what it does not contain is CodeWarrior (the program referenced in the text) or a similiar program for actually working with C++. To be perfectly clear, you must first acquire software elsewhere before you be able to begin using the information and exercises in the text AT ALL. It strikes me as a very serious oversight / error on the part of the authors to have not included at least a trial version of the required software in order to let people use the book upon receipt.

Good Book When Taking With Another Course

This book is one of my favorite C++ books. Now this book will only confuse you if your not in a C++ programming class. When I was taking a C++ class I found out it really helped out when taken with the class. Some of the other reviewers are right in the part where they say some examples have concepts not yet introduced. However, I found out that if you read over the concept after your teacher has gone over it in class it helps give you a clearer understanding. I would give this book between 4 and 4 1/4 stars if possible, mainly because the text does contain a couple of errors. However, since this book helped me out so much I'll give it a 5. This book even has an introduction to windows programming. Although it just goes over message boxes in dept it does give you some motivation for learning the Windows 32 API.

Good Post-Ian Fleming Bond Read

While nothing will take the place of Ian Fleming's James Bond novels, Kingsley Amis did the best at recreating the original Bond feel to his book. Certainly Gardner and the other successors to the Bond spy novels have had to "update" the series, Amis, as Robert Markham, did quality work. It is unfortunate that other writers did not take on the Robert Markham persona in delving into the Bond series.
