Academic and Fascinating

This rendering of the historical changes in Russia prior to the Soviet revolution is fascinating. To understand the Russian nation one must understand how it has transpired over the centuries and this excellent piece of historical writing helps to put that all into perspective. Primarily it raised questions in my mind about our own country, noting that we are in the transition from a Judeo-Christian nation to one that is secular. When that happened in Russia, it changed the ethics, the sociology, the economy and the ethnic culture of the nation. The rest is history.

Misnomer

Based on the title, I hoped to find a history of Russian Orthodoxy. Instead, the book seems obsessed only with how and when Russian leaders described Russia as distinctly the heirs of the Orthodox faith, in other words the third Christian Empire or "kingdom of God": beginning with Rome, followed by Byzantium, and finally Russia. There are certainly merits to the historical information, but the book is neither chronologically linear, nor a history of Russian faith. Instead, it is a perusal of a national idea, in apparently nonlinear form.

About the Author
Harry J. Magoulias is professor of history at Wayne State University. He holds the Ph.D. in history from Harvard University and was a research fellow at Dumbarton Oaks. Professor Magoulias has previously published two books with Wayne State University Press: Byzantine Christianity: Emperor, Church and the West (1982) and a translation of the fifteenth-century Byzantine history written by Doukas titled Decline and Fall of Byzantium to the Ottoman Turks (1975).

Expensive but worth it

Nothing like reading a contemporary historian who loves to belittle every single emperor. Choniates is a whole different kinda animal he gives you the information on emperors who put him in power and those who put him out but none the less he seems to stick to the facts most of the way. He isn't bogged down by this whole right to rule of the west he just speaks of the emperors and their ability to rule. Which unfortunately leading up to the 4th crusade wasn't all that grand

Choniates' account is the Byzantine record of the years up to, and including, the sack of Byzantium in the so-called "fourth crusade".

I BOUGHT my copy directly from WAYNE UNIVERSITY PRESS ( re: wsupress.wayne.edu I searched for "city of byzantium" on their site). It cost USD$79.95 a lot less than the USD$699- ++ that opportunistic sellers on Amazon are selling their copies for.

Choniates dissects the Byzantine state and the events within the state that led to the successful sack of Byzantium in the so-called "fourth crusade" by the "crusaders". The affairs of the Byzantine state had pretty much imploded some 20 years prior to the sack. Choniates' account makes it clear that the rot set in with the usurper Andronikos ... his reign is certainly not pretty: (ie, Andronikos murders the 15 year old legitimate emperor, Alexios, and then takes Alexios' wife, Anna, daughter of Louis VII, king of France, aged 11 as his wife). My personal interest in this book lies in Choniates' account of a Byzantium in which survived the achievements of classical antiquity: literature, building and engineering, art and sculpture.

This is a city in which the Greek pagan past was still intact. Contrary to the claims made that the classical past had been dismantled & destroyed by christianity many centuries earlier, we find in Byzantium, that the statues of pagan gods and heroes - the very examples of a pagan past - were still extant in 1204.

The statue of Athena which had graced the parthenon (Athens) had been relocated to Byzantium centuries earlier. She was still there in 1204, with her gorgoneion, protective snake, etc (unlike the serpent in judaic literature, the snake was worshipped by the pagan greeks). The statue of Athena was destroyed by the Byzantines themselves (& not by the "crusaders") in this instance. (The Byzantines believed that she was calling the "crusaders" because her hand pointed to the west). The description of her by Choniates brought tears to my eyes at least.

The survival of antique knowledge, science, technology, art, literature, poetry & philosophy had survived in Byzantium despite christianity... (& its preservation had nothing to do with the Arabs who have been credited in doing so by the catholic west - the very destroyers in 1204).

An Impressive and Vivid Medieval Chronicle

This is one of the finest histories to come out of medieval Byzantium, and deserves a place on a medieval history buff's bookshelf along with the better-known works of Procopius, Psellus, and Anna Comnena. It is an astonishing medieval history - vivid, comprehensive, and generally fair-minded.
Choniates described a dramatic period -- the years 1120-1207, which includes the blood-soaked end of the Comneni dynasty and the catastrophic Fourth Crusade -- and he describes it in memorable and telling detail. Choniates was a lawyer and court official who served the Emperor Isaac II Angelus. He was an astute student of politics, a scholar who deeply revered the Empire's classical heritage, and a deeply honorable and courageous man (who resigned from his position at court rather than serve the usurper Andronicus Comnenus, for example). Choniates's classical education is responsible for both one of the book's most delightful aspects, and also for one of its principal faults: he attempts to imitate Homer by frequently tossing off poetically illustrative similies. When these work, they are delightfully vivid, as when he notes that "the protosebastos [Alexius Comnenus] clung to the palace apartments like an octopus clamping its suckers on a rock", or or when he sums up the Emperor Isaac II's indecisiveness by observing that he "acted out of caprice and was subject to sudden changes like the backward flow of the straits at Aulis", or when he notes that the Emperor Alexius III was so ignorant that he "knew no more, in fact, of what was going on in the Roman Empire than did the inhabitants of ultima Thule." However, sometimes he strains for effect and the result falls flat. In general, however, he has a far better feel for memorable or colorful details than do most medieval historians, as when he describes the end of the unsuccessful marriage between the Serbian prince Stefan Nemanja and Princess Eudocia of Byzantium: the prince accused his wife of adultery, "stripped her of her woman's robe, leaving her with only her undergarment, which was cut round so that it barely covered her private parts, and dismissed her thus in disgrace to go forth as a wanton".
Choniates generally at least makes an effort to be fair to everyone he describes, but he knew almost all of the key players described in the last 25 years his book covers, and his personal grudges occasionally show. He was deeply shocked at the wanton destruction wrought by the Latin Crusaders who seized Constantinople in 1204; this edition includes his celebrated description of the statues destroyed by the Fourth Crusade.

Paul Rand (1914-1996) was a pioneering figure in American graphic design whose career spanned almost seven decades. IBM, UPS, ABC. If these acronyms ring a bell, their ubiquitous logos springing instantly to mind, then you know the work of Paul Rand (1914-1996), the Picasso of Graphic Design. A pioneer in the field of visual communication, Rand developed a fresh and individual design language drawn from European art movements including Russian constructivism, de Stijl, and the Bauhaus. His career as an art director, teacher, writer, and design consultant to major corporations spanned almost seven decades. Rand arguably got his start at the tender of 3 when he first began to secretly copy pictures of the attractive Palmolive models pictured in advertising displays in his father's grocery store in Brooklyn, New York. He later modeled his aesthetic on avant-garde artists like Paul Klee, El Lissitzky, and architect Le Corbusier, each of whom advocated a timeless spirit in design. Rand began his career in an era when working by hand was a given, a reality that would change before his eyes as the mass media, entertainment, and consumer industries were revolutionized by increasingly technical equipment, and ultimately the computer.

About the Author
Steven Heller is the art director of the NY Times Book Review and co-chair of the MFA Design program at the School of Visual Arts. He is the editor of the AIGA online journal, VOICE. He is a contributing editor to PRINT, EYE, Baseline, and ID. He writes frequently for Metropolis and other design magazines. He is author, co-author, and editor of over 90 books on design and popular culture.

George Lois, a native New Yorker, joined Doyle Dane Bernbach as an art director in 1958 and started his first agency in 1960. He is the recipient of an AIGA Gold Medal, among other honours, and the author of two books on advertising. He continues to consult for major corporations.

Jessica Helfand is a partner at Winterhouse, a design collaborative in New England, and a founding editor of "Design Observer," She teaches in the graduate program in graphic design at Yale University and has written several books on design and cultural criticism. She lives in Falls Village, CT.

The Late Great Paul Rand

If you know anything about design, the words Paul Rand retain some meaning for you. It may be vague, perhaps one of your professors recommended you look him up, maybe one of your design icons listed him as an influence.

Or quite likely you have seen some of his work, and never knew the man behind such world famous, global dominating logos. This has to be the most in depth Paul Rand book I have read, and I have borrowed many from various libraries. Which inclines me to say that if the history of design has ever intrigued you or you just like Mr.Rands work, then this is probably the best choice for you. Not only does it have a ton of images but it's probably the best bang for you buck as far as Rand books go.

Buy a Magnifying Glass

This is a pretty thorough book on a graphic design icon. Unfortunately, the book is typeset very poorly in an 8pt serif font. Reading more than a few pages at a time strains your eyes and results in a headache - ironic considering Rand was a firm believer in usable design.

Lots of full color samples of Rand's work to coincide with the text, which is nice.

Overall, this book is a great resource. It's too bad the type is so difficult to read.

Pretty Darn Good

It's a small book by page count and by size, and the contents while interesting and VERY MOTIVATING are thin .... Nothing new. What I'll say is that the duo are motivating and reassuring for people in an awful marketplace, so I gave it to two older friends trying to find new job alternatives but fearing they have no real options. That said, it is one step longer than a HBR article, but less substantive, and generally plays aggregator for stuff already out there to make the point that people need to respect and leverage their experience - not feel embarrassed not to have all the letters behind their names.

Really. For me, The Real-Life MBA is The Real-Life Business Book of the moment.

I received my book in Lisbon the day after it was launched, on April 15 (I love Amazon!). Curious, I started to read it immediately until a point I said to myself ‘Oh - this is too important to be read just when I have a bit of free time or in the midst of a million things’. It's like going back to your favorite teachers classroom where they make the class so much fun you forget that your actually learning anything. The story was fairly interesting but I didn't care to be left hanging. In my opinion a book is either free or I pay for it -- I don't appreciate a few chapters and then told I will have to pay for the rest.

If I misunderstood I apologize but I don't care for this sort of promotion.

Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice shame on me. I guess the shame is on me because when I got to the end of this book, it was only PART of the book. So I spent the money for the rest of the book on the sequel "Moonlight Falls on Seven Sisters" (book 2) but there was no end to the story in this book. We are not talking about just another book about the same people, we are talking about not finishing the story at all. Ok, so dumb of me not to check it out first, but the conclusion to the book is not available on the Kindle. So if and when I find the end of the book, I will have lost interest or forgotten what was going on with the plot, I will say that I enjoyed the writing and the plot is interesting, but I hate it when I get a "Book" and it is only some of the chapters of the real book.

False advertising

You think you are getting a full novel but it is not.

Just so everyone knows when getting this book, there isn't an ending. It is the start of the story. If you are into historical, paranormal novels you will pick up this book only to find you have been tricked into thinking you are getting a full novel with a beginning, a middle and an end. You get to the beginning of the middle and that's it.. I guess so you have to buy Book 2 and then I guess book 3 etc. No one should pay for this book. Only read if you are willing to buy the next book and who knows you may just find you will have to buy again and again. I don't mind being led into buying book 2 but I want to have some closure to book 1 not left just when the action starts. Other authors do it so such better without the reader left hanging with a bunch of nothing.

Amazing and so timely it could have been written yesterday

Amazing and so timely it could have been written yesterday, because the defects of the souls who lead one to left the schools and search to attract the attention on oneself is a timeless affair. It's a book which should be on every student of knowledge shelve and the best argumentation to this day about this issue. It tackle as well the issue of pseudo-following a school while in reality claiming in practice to be an independent thinker.
The translation is great as well as the benchmarking and the biographies help a lot to situate all the people Ibn Rajab speak about;
