INTRODUCTION
On February 26, 2012, my paper airplane design, Suzanne, flying 226 feet and 10 inches, broke the old paper airplane world record for distance by 19 feet and 6 inches. It’s fair to say that Joe Ayoob, my thrower, and I shattered it. The old mark had stood for nine years. Joe and I had made better distances in the six prior practices, but then, that’s what makes record breaking so interesting. A record during practice isn’t a record. It’s not official until declared so under the specific guidelines during a sanctioned attempt.
 
Records are made to be broken. It’s the whole reason for having them. The goal, the chase, the falling short, and the trying again are all required components of a record attempt. This record was no different. I tried many models over a three-year period when I was “officially” working on breaking the record. Of course, the truth is, every great distance plane I ever made was step toward this goal. My hope is that your world-record journey starts, or continues, here. Helping someone else break this record is another of my goals. Perhaps it will be you.
 
Believing you can do it is the first step. Making something as sophisticated as a flying machine from the most modest of resources is the beginning of an adventure. Where does it lead? Using less to make more is where we have to go as a planet. Eventually we’ll find a way to use less energy to light a room, less fuel to move from home to job, and make less pollution from powering the world. Viewed from this perspective, the answers seem obvious: conservation—yes, creating new products and technologies—yes, doing less—no, doing more with less—yes. And we’re back to paper airplanes.
 
I’m frequently asked what advice I have for budding paper pilots. Oddly, I’m usually at a loss. Folding comes so naturally for me, I can’t imagine not making paper airplanes. It’s taken me years to figure out that not everyone is like this. It’s true that some people might actually need encouragement. After giving this due consideration, I’ve come up with the following suggestion.
If you’ve never been to a Maker Faire, find one and go. It’s a celebration of making things—all kinds of things—from tiny robots to clothes to giant sculptures of steel and stone, and yes, sometimes paper airplanes. Making things is part of who we are as Americans and who we are as humans. From the biological imperative to make more people to the need to know who made that cake, we’re hardwired to like the whole idea.
 
As a kid, I liked making toys. My brothers and I would make spinning tops from wooden spools, rubber-band guns using spring-loaded clothes pins as the triggers, parachutes from napkins and string, rubber-band powered boats, kites, balsa-wood planes, and yes, paper airplanes.
 
Sadly, making things has been largely lost as part of our culture. Toys now need to “do something” so that even playing with the thing is optional. In my view, this is a huge mistake. We are robbing ourselves of a very important experience: experimenting, exploring, creating—in short, making things.
 
Paper airplanes embody the scientific method. Every throw is an experiment. It’s a hobby that begs the paper pilot to understand ever more in order to excel. Hypothesis, experiment design, trial, and results—it’s all built into every plane and every throw. To play with a paper airplane is to dabble in science, whether you know it or not.
We have a number of global issues confronting us. Global energy shortages, food shortages, water shortages, and something people are calling global warming are all worrisome. These problems will have answers that only science can provide. We have no spare brains on the planet. We need everyone thinking about these challenges in a rigorous way.
 
Imagine this: a world of people playing with science, who get up every morning, focus on what’s good, and imagine how to make more of that. You can call me a dreamer. I don’t mind. You don’t have to believe a word of what I say. Just make a paper airplane and experience how exhilarating that feels. We’re born makers. When you make something, anything from a pie to a pencil drawing, it’s like waking a dormant part of you. The world shifts slightly. You can feel it, and it feels good.
 
Suzanne, the world-record paper airplane, boasts a series of firsts: the first glider to hold the distance record, the first paper airplane to use changing airspeed to enhance performance, the first plane to use a thrower/designer team, and the first plane to break the record after the run-up-to-throw distance was shortened from 30 to 10 feet. It is a truly amazing aircraft. I believe Suzanne changes the way distance records will be broken in the future. The days of brute-force darts are gone, replaced by the age of true gliders.
 
A little free advice: take nothing for granted. Suzanne is a great aircraft. I didn’t find the design hiding in someone else’s work. I created it by working hard, listening closely, and observing keenly. You probably possess these skills too. This plane is only one of many possible solutions to the challenge. You may discover others.

More easy to make paper planes and info than you will probably ever need!

Collins has published several other books of planes and just gets better at illustrating how to fold them and explaining the nuances of making one perform. Many of the paper planes I've made over the years were dogs despite being advertised as great. This book helped me understand why. A slight miss-crease here, a bad fold there, and they usually added up to disappointment and were quickly consigned to the recycle bin. Collins discusses and illustrates how to tune your plane so it doesn't disappoint. In addition, there is a lot of easily understood information about the aerodynamics that allow these planes to fly. Who knew there is a correct and incorrect way to throw a plane? There is heavy, colorful, tear-out paper for some of the planes in the back of the book. But, I'll just continue to use regular printer paper or the card stock that fronts some magazines and advertisements. A useful, educational book.

Low-tech fun with the kids, but terrible print quality

I purchased this book for ideas for our school's Science Night, and was inspired after seeing John Collins' interview on Conan. While the folding and flying provide hours of entertainment, I was shocked by how poor the print quality is of the book. It looks like a low-resolution inkjet was used cover to cover, which makes discerning the folds difficult, and is a good strain on my eyes. I found that for the purposes of learning a few new paper plane designs, there are several decent Google Play/Apple App Store apps that provide clearer, animated folds for great flyers, as well as plenty of content online. I wish I'd previewed a hard copy of this book before purchasing.

Single largest collection of truly exceptional planes. . . for enthusiasts

This is one of two "must have" paper airplane books that are out there for serious folders.

I have collected almost every paper airplane book in or out of print that I could find in the last few years as I discovered that paperflight was a great way to combine two of my hobbies: paragliding and origami. So being the obsessive that I am for these sorts of things, I started rounding up every book on the subject and I discovered that there are really just two books that I couldn't do without: this book and LaFosse's "Planes for Brains."

Inside this book you will find all of Mr. Collins' most useful and elegant models with a few exceptions that can be found in his first book, "The Gliding Flight." The "Suzanne" model which was used to set the distance world record referenced in the title of the book is really the most elegant and impressive plane model around. It is simple enough that anyone over 6 or 7 could fold it, but it just goes and goes. Forgoing the tape and using nose or fuselage locks makes for a go-to plane in any situation. Two others not to miss in this book which were included in earlier books of his are the "Starfighter" and the "Boomerang." Both are great, especially the latter. With some practice at both folding and flying, the Boomerang is too much fun. And how Collins ever figured out how to fold this plane is a mystery as its folds are rather non-intuitive, however it is definitely worth learning.

There seems to be some dissatisfaction regarding this book in that the models are too complex. They are complex, but they are not the most complex around. They are, however, the most accomplished around. The models in the LaFosse book mentioned above are really beautiful and have their own genius to the folding (they are even more complex), but they do not perform as well as Collins' planes do. If you are looking for a rudimentary paper airplane book, I would recommend the Klutz book as it is simple, but has some useful ideas for kids to explore with.

Isn't this the cat's meow? An encyclopedia of Witchcraft for the 21st century. Although it can be used by going to the index, I read it from cover to cover. This is the best Witchcraft encyclopedia I've ever read or had. What a blessing! Quite a myriad of topics: a grand discussion of botanicals, understanding fairy tales, Witchcraft's uneasy life past and present, talk of boon and bane in Witchcraft, an inquiry into Women's Mysteries. I could go on; that's a tiny picture; there's much much more. There's a 21 page index, 9 page bibliography, and enough to entrance your interest forever. I recommend this book for today's serious student.

The new edition of Snell's Clinical Anatomy-An Illustrated Review with Questions and Explanations provides the perfect accompaniment for its parent text-Clinical Anatomy for Medical Students. The book is based on the format of the progenitor text but is essentially a condensed version of the latter. As such, it is particularly suitable for those readers (medical, dental, allied health science students) who require an easy-to-use quick reference review of basic clinical anatomy which is ideal for exam preparation purposes, or as a stand alone text for first-time students embarking on a clinical anatomy course. One of the most impressive features of Snell's Illustrated Review is the widespread utilisation of detailed tables and figures which enhance the memorisation of anatomical facts and simplify the learning process. Undoubtedly, many students struggle to assimilate the elaborate and at times seemingly inexhaustive amount of information commonly encountered in anatomy lectures - particularly the complex intricacies of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. However, Snell's text manages to present concise yet thorough descriptions of muscles and their origins, insertions, nerve supplies and actions, as well as nicely summarising cranial nerves and the branches of the various plexi and their distributions in a highly accessible manner. Kenneth Lonergan is the author of "This Is Our Youth," selected as one of "Time"'s ten best plays of 1998. Thoroughly enjoyed this!

I read this as an exercise. I borrowed it from the NYPL along with the movie to ready first the script, then watch the movie. This script is full of intriguing plot twists and fully developed characters. I appreciate the moments when poetry is read aloud :) and I look forward to seeing how the women's issue scenes were directed and acted for the screen. Now I'm off to watch the film and work out. You, my fellow lit-lover or writer or student, should spend a few hours reading this script! It's a good one.

Some Good Moments

Lonergan's "You Can Count on Me" remains one of my all-time favorite movies, so I was eagerly anticipating Margaret. In my view, however, it's something of a let-down. There are some good scenes, Anna Paquin and J. Smith-Cameron (Lonergan's wife) are very good. The film is intelligent and it feels like real life. But, somehow the story never came together for me. I watched both the longer cut and the shorter version and preferred the shorter.

When Randall Hawthorne, a clowning but depressed Vietnam War veteran living in a central Massachusetts city in the early 1980s, commits suicide, he leaves behind a stunned and grieving family—nine-year-old daughter Frankie; her younger brother, Teddy; and their mother, Gerry, a waitress. Frankie, who narrates this wise and often funny first novel about loss and survival (after the collection, A Jeweler's Eye for Flaw), masks her loneliness and pain with the desperate bravura of a precocious but wounded adolescent, mocking her teachers and the school psychologist, drawing obsessively in her sketchbook and dissociating from events in her life by imagining she's a character in a book. But Frankie is too smart and tough to remain isolated forever, and as she proceeds through high school and toward college, she begins to understand the need to connect with others. Most important, she sees how her father's jokes and tall tales were attempts to cover his postwar anguish and to make his children love him. Frankie is Unforgettable

The author, Christie Hodgen made a wise and wonderful choice to have a child narrate this book. Frankie Hawthorne is nine years old when her father, whom she is very close to, commits suicide and leaves both she and her younger brother, Teddy to kind of fend for themselves because their mother works all the time and when she isn't working she's glued to the TV set. Frankie has a widly ascerbic, mocking personality and sense of humor. She carries the entire novel and does so quite well. Every line in this book is placed just right and is authentic. This book is very much like real life and I enjoyed it very much.

Disaffection, unemployment, the government's disregard for returning veterans, an increasingly unpopular war: all these things color the daily travails of the Hawthorne family, near Boston in the 1980's. For nine-year-old Frankie and her younger brother, Teddy, such problems do not exist, protected by their parents, Gerry and Randall, for that all-too-brief respite called childhood. Gerry works double shifts at a local restaurant, Friendly's, while Randall, a Vietnam amputee, attends to the needs of the children, filling their days with foolish jokes and silly banter, endless Groucho Marx imitations ("Hello, I must be going"), a magical world of TV images and spontaneous laughter. Whatever tensions bedevil their parent's marriage, Frankie and Teddy are exempt, at least until fate intervenes. Even an unexpected visit from "Uncle Harpo" only adds to the children's enjoyment, enthralled by story-filled hours and raucous humor as the brothers reprise the antics of their own youth.

When Randall shoots himself, no longer able to sustain the despair that wracks his days, Frankie and Teddy's childhood comes to an abrupt end. Gerry is overwhelmed, barely treading the rising water of her own grief and helpless to protect her children from the sudden tragedy. Teddy and Frankie rise bravely to the occasion, the emotional fissures of the family only gradually surfacing as the years pass. This story puts the reader in the very places Frankie inhabits. Throughout the tough years of her adolescence, Hodgen expertly creates the life, family, and times of a misunderstood, often stepped-on young woman trying to find her place. A must read!

Not a teaching book anymore

The first edition of this book was wonderful to teach students who were completely unfamiliar with VHDL. Although the book was not complete, it started with what you just needed to know at the moment and then gradually built up. (Unfortunately there were also many typo's)
The second edition is just the opposite. Far too much detail, far too soon. Most of the paragraphs in the first chapters are completely un-understandable for someone unfamiliar with VHDL. There are details in these chapters that are only explained 10 chapters later. (e.g. configurations, testbenches etc etc) It is still a good book for those who are already familiar with VHDL. But I surely do NOT recommend it anymore for novice students. My old students loved the first edition. My current students just hate this new edition and try to find the first edition on Amazon!

OK for teaching, with caveats

I've adopted this book for a class I teach in digital systems design. I agree with another reviewer that the book has problems for instructional use. It does overwhelm the student in the first chapters! I reduced the problem by writing a VHDL introduction I give the students, and telling them to only skim sections of the first few chapters of the book.

I'd also warn against assigning problems from the text. I've found that the frequently require knowledge gained only after reading latter chapters or require VHDL features that are missing from the software that we use.

I know this sounds like a negative review, and you might ask why I gave it 4 stars. Where it wins is in that it is very thorough and isn't a "throwaway" textbook. It's the closest book to reality that I've seen. It's also very well priced.

Best book yet on FPGA instruction!

I own all the Pong Chu VHDL/Verilog books and I find this book the easiest and friendliest to understand! To the reviewer whom spoke in a negative fashion about this book, they know not what they are talking about because they have the older version of the book which is not obsolete by any means! This book has a few usable pieces of firmware that I like which I cannot find in the Pong Chu books. It shows you how to interface an I2C controller and LCD controller. This is all in the state machine logic section. Just spoke with professor Volnei today and asked for the book source. He opened up the examples section and removed the password no questions asked! What a nice guy! So there you go...Now you have access to the source code in pdf format! I have also overheard that he is working on the Third Edition of the book! So exciting and cannot wait to see some new material soon...Best book on FPGA hands-down and more legible and easier to understand than other convoluted babble I've had the non-pleasure of reading. I am so impressed with this book that I am migrating all the examples from ALTERA to Lattice on the Machx03 breakout board...What a great way to learn one of the most secretive tools in engineering! Five Stars...Get it and Learn it! :)
