Jeffrey A. Mello is Dean of the School of Business and Professor of Business Law and Management at Siena College. . He previously held faculty and administrative positions at Barry University, Towson University, the George Washington University, the University of California at Berkeley, Golden Date University and Northeastern University, from where he received his Ph.D. He has been a recipient of the David L. Bradford Outstanding Educator Award, presented by the Organizational Behavior Teaching Society, and has received international, national, and institutional awards for his research, teaching, and service. He has authored five books and published more than one hundred book chapters, journal articles, and conference papers in journals such as the JOURNAL OF BUSINESS ETHICS, BUSINESS HORIZONS, INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION, BUSINESS & SOCIETY REVIEW, JOURNAL OF EMPLOYMENT DISCRIMINATION LAW, SETON HALL LEGISLATIVE JOURNAL, JOURNAL OF INDIVIDUAL EMPLOYMENT RIGHTS, PUBLIC PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT, EMPLOYEE RESPONSIBILITIES AND RIGHTS JOURNAL, LABOR LAW JOURNAL, JOURNAL OF LAW AND BUSINESS, and the JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT EDUCATION. The book was okay, however, I needed the 3rd edition and this book is the 4th! Most chapters are the same but the additional reading at the end of the chapters is not all identical. Oh well.

A great tool to start you off in the right direction.

I was really surprised when I was actually able to get this book in my hands!!! I waited so many months before I could order this book! Any way, this book is comprised from three different artists', Hikaru Hayashi, (my fav by the way) Takehiko Matsumoto, and Kazuaki Morita. These three artists' teamed up to compile a book with there own renditions of stetching manga. Basically this book is a giant rough sketch book showing you the basic shapes they used to get their art work to look the way it does. This is actually helpful in alot of ways. It is preparing you on how to do this so that you can have a idea on how to draw your own manga masterpieces. Toward the end of the book, they give examples of some of the artist's work and how to improve the color on the artwork.

Good Mid-Level Reference

This book covers a modern technique used by professional artists. If you have no drawing experience whatsoever, this might not be a good place to start. Those who have spent some time learning basic techniques and can produce basic figures could will definitely profit from this book.

The brilliant part is complete sets of images showing pros creating a new drawing from scratch, with detailed notes on each step. Given sufficient talent, you could eliminate some steps and duplicate what the artists are doing to finish drawings faster.

However, by skipping directly to what the pros apparently do now, the beginning artist misses the building blocks of learning that those same pros went through to get where they are today. Generally a beginning book starts with simple shapes, basic anatomy, perspective, etc. Mastery of fundamentals gives an artist the freedom and capability to create any character and pose.

The analogy to this is the first impressionist master painters. Every one of them was first trained as a classical painter. Picasso could paint in photographic realism if he wanted. His mastery of the fundamentals made his cubist work great.

If you have the basics already, this is a wonderful reference, and I would recommend it to beginners as well so long as they also get references that teach fundamentals.

A great drawing book regardless of style.

Over the years I've slowly put together a sizable library of these How to Draw Manga books without even realizing it.

That being said, I'll be the first to admit that the usefulness of some of these books is kind of hit or miss. But the Manga Sketching books are fantastic drawing resources regardless of whether you want to draw in a Manga style or not.

This book is really more grounded in basic figure drawing techniques than other How to Draw Manga books that are largely caged in by the conventions of Japanese comic art. It's also a heftier book at being almost 60 pages longer than some of the other books in the series.

A major section of the book is dedicated to a broad survey of human anatomy, and I would say it does a better job on the subject than many books that focus strictly on anatomy for artists. There's 9 pages dedicated to the head & neck alone. And all of the examples feature the body in motion, which is far more helpful in seeing how the body fits together than a bunch of stiff poses.

Much of the rest of the text is about design tips to solidify the body type you're shooting for or "enhancing a sense of presence" as the manga books often put it, which boils down to creating more interesting, dynamic poses.

Good figure drawing has many basic principles, no matter what style is laid on top of it. "Sketching Manga Style" is a fantastic resource to have around.

SHOCKINGLY SMART, HEARTFELT, AND INSPIRING READ

I didn't expect to like this book… at all. I’m a middle-aged man -- not exactly Taylor Swift’s demographic. And – full disclosure – I’m in a related industry and was sent the book for free in return for an honest review. However, I do think Taylor Swift is impressively talented and enjoy a lot of her music. So I figured, Why not? and took it with me on a plane trip.

I was truly stunned at how much I enjoyed the read. It made a part of my trip breeze along effortlessly and amusingly. Not only is the writing clever, snappy, and engaging, Taylor’s story as it’s told here is wholly compelling, with surprising twists and ups-and-downs. Moreover, she may have been born with certain innate gifts, as well as born into a family that afforded her certain advantages. But that and $2.10 will buy you a Starbucks Grande coffee. This young lady is a study in determination and perseverance which readers, young and old, and not merely her fans, would find fascinating. I have much more respect for her now, having read this, and I had a fun time doing so. I recommend this book unabashedly, certainly to Taylor lovers, but also to parents who aren’t sure what message Taylor sends to their kids, as well as stogy oldsters who just want a great, inspiring jolt of youthful exuberance and human can-do-itness.

TOLD WITH LOTS OF HEART AND EMOTION

I bought this for my teenage daughters who are big Taylor Swift fans. I decided to have a look and read it first and I was pleasantly surprised. The writing was terrific and Parker told the story of Taylor Swift's journey from birth to super stardom very cinematically and with a ton of heart. Five stars.

Taylor Swift's compelling story of talent and determination told in a very readable style

I'm certainly not in her targeted demographic, but I've been entertained by her over the past few years. Of course I knew nothing about her background really. This breezy book is extremely well written and thorough, without being one of those sordid tell alls. It is a well written, with humor, of Swift's determination and confidence (a lesson to us all!) to make the most of her gifts. And she most certainly has. So it should serve as an inspiration to particular females who "got talent" - not just to be a pop star, but to succeed in whatever is one's chosen profession. I came away have more respect and appreciation for this lovely singer. High recommend.

Brilliant as usual :)

This book was a great addition to the Skulduggery Pleasant series that helped me understand and learn more about the world the books are set in. Landy's writing is, as usual, amazing, witty and humorous. The stories were all hugely entertaining and some were truly scary, such as Get Behind Thee, Bubba Moon. The stories also filled in so much background information for the books. 5 Stars.
