Life at the Speed of Light: From the Double Helix to the Dawn of Digital Life, by J. Craig Venter

In 2010, scientists led by J. Craig Venter became the first to successfully create "synthetic life"-putting humankind at the threshold of the most important and exciting phase of biological research, one that will enable us to actually write the genetic code for designing new species to help us adapt and evolve for long-term survival. The science of synthetic genomics will have a profound impact on human existence, including chemical and energy generation, health, clean water and food production, environmental control, and possibly even our evolution. In Life at the Speed of Light, Venter presents a fascinating and authoritative study of this emerging field from the inside-detailing its origins, current challenges and controversies, and projected effects on our lives. This scientific frontier provides an opportunity to ponder anew the age-old question "What is life?" and examine what we really mean by "playing God." Life at the Speed of Light is a landmark work, written by a visionary at the dawn of a new era of biological engineering.

From Publishers Weekly
Venter (A Life Decoded), a field giant of genetics, makes a persuasive case that synthetic biology will help us understand, appreciate, and improve our own biology. The impatient genius who arrogantly raced the U.S. government to sequence the human genome, Venter scores many firsts in this emerging field, including the creation—nearly from scratch—of the first synthetic bacterium. It was not a pure first, as he used cytoplasm from an existing cell to boot up his synthetic genome—which only deviated slightly from the genome of an existing bacterium. But it&'s a major coup; Venter&'s synthetic genome successfully instructed the cell to create living proteins. We can now change the software of life, which then changes its own hardware, as it were. Venter shares spellbinding stories from the frontiers of genomics—researchers creating living toolboxes out of mechanisms co-opted from varied life forms. For the wary, he notes nature itself mixes and matches species-specific mechanisms: our own mitochondria were once bacteria engulfed by, and incorporated into, our cells. Gene engineering opens new portals of life-designing potential, he argues, and he champions ethics reviews of such work. Venter instills awe for biology as it is, and as it might become in our hands. Agent: John Brockman, Brockman Inc. (Nov.)

From Booklist
When scientists finally succeed in transmitting to another galaxy the digital instructions for building a living organism, they will rely on science that Venter has pioneered. To understand the groundbreaking work Venter has done, however, readers must revisit Hooke’s seventeenth-century discovery of the cell as the primary structure of life and must peer into an anticipated future of teleportation via quantum entanglement. But the narrative largely focuses on the twentieth-century research fulfilling physicist Schrödinger’s hopes of finding the key of life in a biochemical aperiodic crystal. In particular, readers see how the double helix that Watson and Crick first recognized in DNA 60 years ago has become an adaptable scaffold for genetic engineers wielding potent pools for creating new life-forms. Readers will marvel at the potential that genetic engineering holds for making food, purifying water, generating energy, and curing diseases. Though they may wish to consult other sources to explore the philosophical and ethical issues he raises, readers will thank Venter for an insider’s perspective on epoch-making science. --Bryce Christensen

Review
“Life at the Speed of Light provides an important look behind the hyperbolic headlines that often accompany synthetic biology, a guide to the future of life from one of the scientists helping to create it."

“Craig Venter is a singular individual... at once inheritor of molecular biology’s prior triumphs and the wellspring of its future…He compellingly depicts his diverse research as a concerted effort to shuttle biology between the material and the digital worlds…a gripping tale and welcome antidote to dry materials and methods sections that make such sagas feel disembodied and inevitable.”

“One of the world's leading scientists delivers a history of molecular biology and its many ramifications depicted as it has been and will continue to be, a creator of the golden age of modern biology. His style is that of a dispatch from the front, urgent and engaged, as only a participant could write it, and the best of its genre since James D. Watson's The Double Helix.”
~Edward O. Wilson, University Research Professor Emeritus, Harvard University

“In 1943 Erwin Schrödinger asked the question “What is life?” Craig Venter decided to find out. The first step in understanding something is to take it apart. The next step is to put it back together. Finally, prove that you haven’t neglected anything by building it yourself from scratch. In this articulate, precise, and uniquely first-person report from the front lines between biology and technology--commendably addressing the role of proteins as well as the nucleotides that code for them--Craig Venter sheds new light on Schrödinger’s question, while explaining how his own pioneering work reading and writing genetic sequences between living cells and computers is enabling life as we know it to take the first steps toward becoming something else. A landmark account.”
~George Dyson, author of Turing's Cathedral and Darwin Among the Machines

“Life at the Speed of Light takes you to the frontier of science to explain the exciting potential of synthetic biology.  Craig Venter, one of our most vivid and iconoclastic scientists,  weaves the history of our understanding of life with his personal journey as one of the key scientists in decoding the human genome, and now one of the leaders of research into programming DNA and even making synthetic living organisms.   It could prove to be one of the most important technologies of this century.”
~Nathan Myhrvold, co-founder of Intellectual Ventures and former Chief Technology Officer of Microsoft

“Humanity is entering a period of radical transformation and one reason is due to Craig Venter's research in creating new life forms based on computer designed synthetic DNA.  Life at the Speed of Light is his beautifully written, powerful and persuasive story on how DNA information and computers will blend in the coming singularity, that watershed in the evolution of humanity beyond which amazing new possibilities for life, society and everything we care about will emerge.”
~Ray Kurzweil, author of How to Create a Mind and The Singularity Is Near

next life
By Renato Baserga
well narrated by the expert in the field. It is a fascinating story, and actually Venter underplays it as he does not delve into the multiple applications that can be derived from "new" cells. I am sure he is aware of what can be done with new cells, but somehow he does not spell it out, leaving it mostly to the reader's imagination. But Venter has been the first in other things, and it does not surprise me that he wanted to the first in replacing a "useless" nucleus with one made to order. Good luck to him; he deserves it.

DNA "The Digital Concept"
By Rick B
Another Home run by J. Craig Venter. Science on the edge of our understanding, History the way it should be told, and a future of creation that we will witness in our life times. Read this book, and open your mind to the possibilities and it's realities. The author is not just telling a story, he is telling his story of his life's pursuit of what most considered impossible at the time. For those who have not read his prior book, "Cracking the Genome" Mr. Venter has been and continues to be one of the few people on the planet that has discovered all the genes in our and other species. He is the primary reason that in in the spring of 2000 that President Clinton could make the public announcement that our Human genome had been sequenced nearly 5 years ahead of schedule. I highly recommend both of these books.

Ventor and other real scientists should write more for intelligent citizens who wish be informed
By Joseph Mcdermott
J. Craig Ventor is without doubt a genius of DNA and molecular biology. He revolutionized the field of DNA sequencing.
The book contains much interesting information, but his authoring skills do not match his science. In particular the book is not always well organized. It should also be 100 pages longer. Dr. Venter has many interesting, even startling, observations but leaves us thirsty for more details. For these reasons I only give it 3 stars for style.

Now for the other side. If he writes a sequel, I will buy it. Regrettably popular science writing has declined into junk headlines and trivia. It is very hard for non-experts to find out what is going on in this and other vital fields. Dr. Ventor and other real scientists should write more for intelligent citizens who wish be informed. 5 stars for his effort.

From School Library Journal
Gr 5-7-Set during the 1960s and 1970s, the novel follows Jason Steed from his birth, which caused his mother's death and created a rift between him and his father, to a critical mission he accidentally joins at age 11. Jason is almost superhuman: his martial arts skills across several styles are amazing, his linguistic ability incredible, and his tenacity and resolve, even at age five, are impressive. But despite his amazing skills and his knack for getting himself into places and organizations where he shouldn't be, Jason has normal emotions: he craves his father's love, he develops firm friendships, he takes a stand against bullies, and he mourns when he cannot prevent the deaths of his friends. The action is fast, and the spy and military aspects of the Sea Cadets, a British organization that trains youngsters for the military, seem designed to appeal to reluctant male readers. The novel is violent, particularly in Jason's final (and accidental) mission, and the deaths that impact him are handled with grace, even while physical injuries are graphically described. The writing is a little unpolished, and Jason's maturity and abilities are over the top, but the adventure is exactly on target for the intended audience.-Alana Joli Abbott, formerly at James Blackstone Memorial Library, Branford, CT (c) Copyright 2010. hard to find books you can buy for your grandkids!
By Sue A. Freivald
This was recommended to me as a book with a decent moral compass. I always read anything I buy for the grandkids before I pass it on and this is a definite winner.

No spoilers here :~).

Is it realistic? No. One of the reviewers bemoaned the lost opportunities to explore political and pragmatic implications and I believe missed the true value of this story for the age group. It was the sort of things dreams are made of -- both bad dreams and good dreams. Jason Steed has the tenacity and abilities even I - as a grandmother - would dream of. He also has the vulnerabilities of a child. The father son relationship is dealt with compassionately for both. The adventures, challenges, and fast pace make it a real page turner and easy read for the reluctant reader.

There is something here for everyone: friendship, conflict, romance, royalty, discipline and responsibility, challenge. I loved it. Was it perfect? No. But close enough for me! I have just ordered the sequels and have several grandsons in mind for the shared adventure. Thank you, Mr. Cooper. Well done, sir!

Amazing Book!!
By JT
I am 12 years old and found this book on goodreads. I didn't think it would be anything special, but I loved it. It is written with the style of Anthony Horrowitz, and is about a boy who is kind of turned into a spy. It is a great book packed with adventure, perfect for kids aged 10 and up. It has good, fast paced writing and a great plot. I think you should definitely read this book.

By Nerissa Angel
This is a book that I want to read over and over. And I wanted to have a copy of it for my children to read also. I love martial arts so I'm really glad that there is another series of a martial arts spy kid. Alex Rider ones are too much like a mini James Bond. These are much more interesting, have more plot twists, and general awesomeness.

By K. J. SMITH
SPOILER ALERT ! ! ! There's one useful concept here and that is the practice of setting yourself a fixed number of minutes to work and then a fixed number of minutes to rest. This way there's always light at the end of the tunnel; you don't feel daunted by an insurmountable task. In fact there is no tunnel; it's more like being on a bridge or a trestle: you can see light all around. I find that very simple suggestion very helpful, but then the author goes of on this obsessive/compulsive anal retentive jag of keeping track of exactly how many work intervals it takes you accomplish each task and assumes it will take precisely that many every time you perform that task, which, after 45 yrs. in the aerospace biz, I know is a load of dingo's kidneys. Every manager since Pharaoh has wanted people to tell him precisely what would happen precisely when---and be fully committed to that commitment (pssst! Tony Robins called and he wants his fantasy back).

Like I said, one good idea and you don't need to buy the book for it. You can get eminently serviceable little plastic tomato timers from Amazon for half a pittance each. I got about four for work and home.

(P.S. Getting up and moving for a couple of minutes every half hour is also really good for you. Ask your doctor.)

No more multi-tasking
By Johnnie Seago
Even though folks think I am a time management guru this book put me to shame! It worked so well I was able to do three times as much. It does put to the death the multi-tasking principle and makes us all FOCUS. Wish that the worksheets were larger and more easily reproduced on a computer download. That would save me more time!

New from the bestselling author of Atonement and The Children Act

Trudy has betrayed her husband, John. She's still in the marital home—a dilapidated, priceless London townhouse—but John's not there. Instead, she's with his brother, the profoundly banal Claude, and the two of them have a plan. But there is a witness to their plot: the inquisitive, nine-month-old resident of Trudy's womb.

Told from a perspective unlike any other, Nutshell is a classic tale of murder and deceit from one of the world’s master storytellers.

Review
“With Nutshell, Ian McEwan has performed an incongruous magic trick ... A smart, funny and utterly captivating novel ... A small tour de force that showcases all of Mr. McEwan’s narrative gifts of precision, authority and control, plus a new, Tom Stoppard-like delight in the sly gymnastics that words can perform.”
—Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times

“Compact, captivating ... The writing is lean and muscular, often relentlessly gorgeous ... McEwan is one of the most accomplished craftsmen of plot and prose.”
—Siddhartha Mukherjee, The New York Times Book Review

“Brilliant . . . Surprisingly suspenseful, dazzlingly clever and gravely profound.”
—Ron Charles, Washington Post

“McEwan pulls it off.  I bought the premise and never looked back . . . The most talked-about novel of the season.”
—Mary Roach, O, The Oprah Magazine

"As an example of point of view, you can look no farther than these gorgeous pages, which not only prove that brevity is the soul of wit but also offer the reader a voice both distinctive and engaging ... The reader [will be] speeding through every page, each one rife with wordplay, social commentary, hilarity, and suspense ... Hats off to Ian McEwan."
—Mameve Medwed, Boston Globe

So here I am, upside down in a woman. Arms patiently crossed, waiting, waiting and wondering who I’m in, what I’m in for. My eyes close nostalgically when I remember how I once drifted in my translucent body bag, floated dreamily in the bubble of my thoughts through my private ocean in slow-motion somersaults, colliding gently against the transparent bounds of my confinement, the confiding membrane that vibrated with, even as it muffled, the voices of conspirators in a vile enterprise. That was in my careless youth. Now, fully inverted, not an inch of space to myself, knees crammed against belly, my thoughts as well as my head are fully engaged. I’ve no choice, my ear is pressed all day and night against the bloody walls. I listen, make mental notes, and I’m troubled. I’m hearing pillow talk of deadly intent and I’m terrified by what awaits me, by what might draw me in.

I’m immersed in abstractions, and only the proliferating relations between them create the illusion of a known world. When I hear “blue,” which I’ve never seen, I imagine some kind of mental event that’s fairly close to “green”—which I’ve never seen. I count myself an innocent, unburdened by allegiances and obligations, a free spirit, despite my meagre living room. No one to contradict or reprimand me, no name or previous address, no religion, no debts, no enemies. My appointment diary, if it existed, notes only my forthcoming birthday. I am, or I was, despite what the geneticists are now saying, a blank slate. But a slippery, porous slate no schoolroom or cottage roof could find use for, a slate that writes upon itself as it grows by the day and becomes less blank. I count myself an innocent, but it seems I’m party to a plot. My mother, bless her unceasing, loudly squelching heart, seems to be involved.

Seems, Mother? No, it is. You are. You are involved. I’ve known from my beginning. Let me summon it, that moment of creation that arrived with my first concept. Long ago, many weeks ago, my neural groove closed upon itself to become my spine and my many million young neurons, busy as silkworms, spun and wove from their trailing axons the gorgeous golden fabric of my first idea, a notion so simple it partly eludes me now. Was it me? Too self-loving. Was it now? Overly dramatic. Then something antecedent to both, containing both, a single word mediated by a mental sigh or swoon of acceptance, of pure being, something like—this? Too precious. So, getting closer, my idea was To be. Or if not that, its grammatical variant, is. This was my aboriginal notion and here’s the crux—is. Just that. In the spirit of Es muss sein. The beginning of conscious life was the end of illusion, the illusion of non-being, and the eruption of the real. The triumph of realism over magic, of is over seems. My mother is involved in a plot, and therefore I am too, even if my role might be to foil it. Or if I, reluctant fool, come to term too late, then to avenge it.

Nutshell by Ian McEwan: A review
By PlantBirdWoman
"God said, Let there be pain. And there was poetry. Eventually."
- from Nutshell

And eventually, luckily for us, there was Ian McEwan, a writer who routinely delivers such lyrical prose that a dedicated reader could weep for pure joy. In Nutshell, he's done it again.

How can one adequately describe this weird and wonderful little novel? The plot is based on Shakespeare's Hamlet, but our narrator is an eighth-month fetus, preternaturally aware and attuned to the ways of the world. He resides "upside down in a woman" and is privy to all that the woman is privy to, including the plot devised by her and her lover (her brother-in-law) to kill her husband, our narrator's father. McEwan's tale is essentially a two-hundred page soliloquy by that fetus as he watches in horror as their plan proceeds. It is absurd but dazzlingly imaginative and clever and somehow manages to be both suspenseful and profound. It is philosophical in range, in its view of a world that the narrator has not yet entered but imagines all too perfectly; it is a comedy that is marked by moments of tragedy.
To be bound in a nutshell, see the world in two inches of ivory, in a grain of sand. Why not, when all of literature, all of art, of human endeavor, is just a speck in the universe of possible things.
Thus speaks our narrator/fetus/philosopher.

Our narrator reveals himself to be as much of a ham as a Hamlet. He has developed a well-informed taste for wine and a worldly grasp of current events gained through attentive listening to the educational podcasts preferred by his mother for her insomniac amusement. When he is bored at night, he kicks his mother awake so she will entertain him.

He recoils in horror at the active sex life pursued by his mother in her advanced state of pregnancy and cringes at the assault of her lover's penis pounding close by his soft skull.

He worries about what will happen to him if their murder plans succeed. Will his mother wind up in prison and will he be born there? Or even if her culpability is not discovered, will she give him up to some foster home or orphanage in order to pursue an unfettered life? The plans he hears her discussing certainly don't seem to include a baby.

In despair at his impotence, he considers suicide by strangling himself on his own umbilical cord. ("To be, or not to be...") But there, he realizes, is the rub.
Pessimism is too easy, even delicious, the badge and plume of intellectuals everywhere. It absolves the thinking classes of solutions. We excite ourselves with dark thoughts in plays, poems, novels, movies.

Every sentence of this short novel seems burnished to perfection. For example, the precocious fetus describes his uncle Claude, the murder conspirator, as a man "whose impoverished sentences die like motherless chicks, cheaply fading." Cheaply fading - one understands Claude completely in that phrase. And did I mention that the fetus' father is a poet and publisher of poets, a purveyor of rich and meaningful sentences?

McEwan has shown a preference for short novels. The last one of his that I read was The Children Act, another brief and well-polished gem. One gets the impression that he is not willing to accept anything else than perfection in his prose and so he whittles everything down to the essentials. This might not be everyone's cup of tea, but for those of us who find brevity to be the soul of wit and who enjoy a bit of philosophy with our fiction, it is hot and tasty and just right.

There is so much insight contained in this short book. The narrator describes a world where poverty and war, "with climate change held in reserve," is driving millions from their homes, vast movements of angry or desolate or hopeful people, "crammed at borders against the razor-wire gates, drowning in thousands to share in the fortunes of the West." His description of faith-based violence and the inanity of identity politics seems a perfect diagnosis of much of what ails modern society.

In this 400th anniversary year of Shakespeare's death, there have been a plethora of rewrites of his plots and themes. A number of them have been successful, some less so. None of them - at least of the ones that I've read - have attained the conspicuous brilliance of McEwan's effort and his beautiful prose. It is a unique bravura performance.

Tales from the unborn
By TChris
The only likable character in Nutshell is a fetus. Fortunately, he’s an exceptionally bright fetus with a rich vocabulary. His mother and father separated after his conception. His father, a poet, has a relationship of some sort with a student. His mother is sleeping with his father’s brother. His mother and brother have a murderous intent, which provides Nutshell’s plot.

In prose that celebrates the richness of the English language, Ian McEwan tells the story from the unborn child’s point of view. The narrator has traditional notions of how parents should behave and is distressed that his own are not up to the task, but while residing in his mother’s womb, he cannot help but love her. Unfortunately for him, occasional kicks when his mother is misbehaving are an ineffective method of influencing her behavior. Yet even a fetus is not without resources.

As always, McEwan’s prose is a treat to be savored. Nutshell also showcases his wit. The narrator has extensive insight into the ways of the world, thanks to the knowledge he has absorbed as his mother listens to talk radio and self-improvement tapes. In addition to parenting, the fetal narrator shares his wry opinions about hope and faith and hatred, as well as current events, culture, sex, and the merits of the wines that his mother consumes.

An inspector with Columbo-like mannerisms adds to the humor. Nutshell is a short novel, not as substantial or dramatic as most of McEwan’s other books, but brevity assures that every word counts in a fun novel that works its way to a satisfying conclusion that manages to be both surprising and inevitable.

A gripping suspenseful plot, told from the perspective of an incredible, observant fetus.
By RobertK
Original, inventive. You need to suspend reason to get into the brilliant mind and perceptions of the fetal narrator of the book, but the plot he discovers and his involvement are gripping. I couldn't put the book down.

The word "classic" is often overused, and seldom applied accurately.
By Peter Carrier
The term will do in this case, however. "Swords Against Death" is a classic of the genre. Immensely entertaining, enjoyable, pithy, droll and just plain fun could be used every bit as interchangeably as 'classic' and still hit the mark.

With passages such as "After all, girls had a way of blotting out all lesser, but not thereby despicable, delights. Girls were for dessert.", how could one see this collection of stories as anything other than a masterpiece of the highest order? Perhaps if one were no fan of fantasy, but only in that rare instance. Otherwise, a careful reader would still take great delight in Leiber's phrasing, rhythm, word selection, vocabulary, structure and use of language in general.

To think that so many of Leiber's works remain ahead of me... I can hardly contain my eagerness.

Wonderful Tales; Kindle edition has a formatting issue
By Carol A. Thompson
Fritz Leiber (hereinafter referred to as The Master) invented Sword & Sorcery. Read him. (Not just the Swords series, everything!)

The fighting is believable. Laughs and perils abound. They fit best into the weird horror category.

The Master's work influenced many others: His city Lankhmar - which was inspried by Los Angeles - inspired Terry Pratchett's Ankh-Morpork - which was also inspired by London. Michael Chabon's "Gentlemen of the Road" is a direct steal.

The KIndle edition has a problem with font size. I normally use a mid-level font size when I read on my Kindles. When I opened this book, the font was too teeny to read! I had to use almost the biggest font to be able to read it!

and I couldn't be happier that I did
By Pistoleer
I recently rediscovered the Fafhrd & the Gray Mouser series, and I couldn't be happier that I did. Superbly written, totally enjoyable fantasy romps with two unforgettable characters. Strongly recommended. Some of the content is SLIGHTLY "racy" - about like a PG-13 movie nowadays.

Essential reading for inclusion in the busy calendar/schedule (NOTsimply for the 'to-do' list)
By Anthony R. Dickinson
Much has been written over the past one hundred years on the topic of time-management, procrastination and motivation, the very best of which would require the average reader several years to ingest (let alone digest and implement). Kruse’ 15 Secrets Successful People Know About Time Management covers most of the same ground within a single volume, can be completed in a single session (if smartly scheduled), thus allowing the busy entrepreneur sufficient time to do what needs to be done. And whereas not all successful business tycoons have attended (or at least remained long enough to graduate) the London School of Economics, Harvard, or Yale, the readers of this book can all gain for themselves a life-long association with MIT (each of us learning about our very own Most Important Task). Whether due to a lack of motivation, procrastination, or any other factors (real or imagined), in Kruse’ own words: “Put simply, the most important things are to know what to focus on and how you are going to get it done. I call this always knowing your most important task, or MIT“ (p22, epub vers). Indeed, the fact that you are reading this review (and thus presumably considering reading the book), your own MIT syllabus would surely help you achieve your goals more quickly, this book containing essential reading material for inclusion within your busy calendar/schedule, rather than its simply being added to your ‘to-do’ list.

Gathering his information from eminently relevant sources (as partly detailed in the subtitle), Kruse’ book glistens throughout from its gems of easily digestible soundbites of savvy-wisdom from the successful. Certainly a great structural format for those preferring not to sit through hours and hours of lectures (as so many a guru’s volumes sometimes really turn out to be), each chapter of ‘15 Secrets …’ presents only a poignant vignette or two, with additional short, sharp, self-explanatory sections subtitled ‘In their own words’, ‘Research says…’, and ‘How does this apply if you’re a(n) .…[Entrepreneur, Exec, ….. student, parent]’. Each chapter also concludes with a ‘Free Bonus’ reference to an additional online resource from the author. Written in a readily accessible style, most chapters also include fun/quirky factoids of leadership personality activities, e.g., that Steve Jobs evicted meeting participants who were unable to state why they were in attendance, or that George Bush won a bet having read 95 books in one year (tho’ we did not also learn those book’s titles !).

Succinctly covering 17 short core chapters, the first 15 cover each of the 15 secrets, the next few suggesting further tips and how they might be combined into a ready-usable ‘system’ (which Kruse calls “E-3C” for Energy, Capture, Calendar & Concentrate), which will differ in detail according to our different preferred lifestyles and circumstances. Following this section is reported discourse relating to some of the most critical content extracted from the interview data relating the time-management confessions/secrets of the billionaires (a success hit-rate of 25% from those Kruse had approached), professional athletes, star students, and entrepreneurs (presented in alphabetical order), and are covered in Chs 18-21 respectively. As such, this book provides a valuable one-stop-shop of optimal time-management advice for professional success, whether the reader be a budding entrepreneur, or anyone else seeking advice in pursuit of their success within their eduventure(s) in whatever chosen field(s) of exploration, ….. if then put into practice, both repeatedly and consistently. This reviewer’s own practice is to read at least 10-20 books on any given subject in order to better grasp its depths, but if you’re looking for a single book to help you master time-management for enhanced practical efficiency on a daily basis, this it.

"Got a minute?"....
By Shea Heaver
....if you do, I'd like to give you a quick rundown on Kevin Kruse's book about managing all 1440 of them each and every day.

That "powerful" 1440 number as Kruse puts it, is the basis for Chapter 1 of this fascinating read which makes you really think about how to maximize the use of your time with meaningful and personal strategies, tips and techniques throughout the remaining pages.

The book is very well researched and (as with his other books on 'Employee Engagement') is constructed in an easy-to-read manner that helps you really get what he is saying.

Kruse doesn't ask the reader to throw out everything they ever read, thought or did to manage their time. Instead he simply challenges some existing mindsets (e.g. using laptops to take meeting notes) while adding many new ideas and suggestions from his own experience and those of highly successful people. The book is littered (particularly later on) with anecdotes and advice from those who have excelled in their field whether it's sports, business or academics.

There are hacks and myth-busters, humorous interjections (such as not having to visualize his beer belly), secrets, tips and "How does this apply" sections that all provide valuable insight and thought-provoking recommendations.

Whether he's advising on how to time-block your day, why trying to multitask is a bad idea (and it is) and finally putting it all together in the E-3C system, you will put this book down with a fresh vision and vigor on how to better manage your time.

Perhaps the best testament I can give Kevin's book is that I intend to read it again in 3-4 months, eager to see just how much of it I have put in place during my 1440 minutes each day.

Great Read With Advice That You Can Apply To All Areas Of Your Life
By Marty Labrado
Most productivity books I've read were a bore to read.
Yeah all the stats are cool, but put some HUMAN in it, ya know?

Kevin Kruse does just that. I reallly enjoyed reading this book.
He has a great writing style and knows how to keep your attention.

The productivity tips in this book are great and really do work if you
apply them. The examples he gives are excellent as well.

Should you buy this book? Hell yeah you should. If you want to
improve your time management then you need this book. It's a steal
for the price and value he provides.

It's hard to find any book in the general personal development book that
reads like a story and will keep you hooked. That's the biggest take away
for me.

If you found this review helpful in any way, feel free to give it a thumbs up,
and/or comment. If you have any questions I'd be more than happy to help
you out as best I can.
