Great book for a beginner

This book was very easy to read and understand. Shortly after reading the book, I knew all I needed to start cutting my family and friends' hair. The only drawback was that the book didn't include how to cut hair that is "folically challenged" (i.e., not much on top)which I could have used a few pointers on for a family member. Regardless, I was able to modify the instructions in the book myself and give him a great haircut.
I would also recommend getting the companion video that shows all of the styles from the book being done by hair professionals.

Good info, Poor Illustrations

The info is good. Im a cosmetology student, so I can actually understand the content. The pictures are not very good. I would like to see color pictures, w/maybe a Manikin demonstration on haircuts, something other than the simple drawings provided.

A Great Place to Start

I feel like this book gave me more professional training than a lot of the other books that I have read (This book has been used in a lot of cosmetology schools) I had already watched the video about 4 times before I bought the book. I don't know if the book would be confusing if you hadn't watched the video beforehand. I feel that between the book and the video this was a great place for me to start learning haircutting! The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is that I feel it could have given us a lot more information on each page - the book didn't have to be that basic!

When getting there was more than half the fun!

Having been an antique dealer, I sold a number of those handsome old steamer trunks. The ones that still had a few hotel labels affixed always commanded a premium. Seeing those old labels couldn't help but conjure up thoughts of the golden age of the passenger liner and all that mode of transit entailed. Unfortunately, those were not my own personal recollections as I am a couple of generations removed from such experiences. Barring the last chapter, of course, the whole Titanic story drew further attention to that memorable and romantic method of travel. Those colorful little labels evoked all that fascination and more.

I can't imagine anyone better suited to have put this collection together that Mr. Vuitton. Being at the height of his career during the heyday of this "Golden Era" and in an industry catering to the wealthiest of travelers it was a natural fit. It appears he solicited help from many of his friends, and I would guess hotel staff, in the expansion of his hobby. Thankfully, Francisca Matteoli has selected a number of these gems and made them available to us in this recently published book.

My first reaction when seeing this volume on Amazon's recommended list was that, given its dimensions, it seemed a bit pricey. Now that I've had a chance to examine it, "up-close and personal", I can see that the price is certainly justified. This book is very well produced. The binding is quite handsome and the paper selected is perfect for the subject matter. I am rather glad they didn't choose to publish this book in a coffee-table format. The smaller size still easily fits several labels per page and it rests much more comfortably in one's lap. (note: sandwiched in between several of the pages are beautifully reproduced vintage postcards further enhancing this books appeal)

There are hundreds of these miniature works of art on display in this 500+ page study - enough to satisfy even the most advanced enthusiast. If you have in interest in graphic arts, travel or just a fondness for early 1900s nostalgia this work is guaranteed to please. A noteworthy contribution to a field long in need of such attention

This book is really sumptuous! It's filled with a huge & beautiful selection of vintage hotel labels and it even has some (copies of) old postcards. If you love ephemera, you can't help but love this book.

Agnes Mary White Sanford (1897-1982) is considered to be one of the principal founders of the Inner Healing Movement. She was the daughter of a Presbyterian missionary in China and the wife of the Episcopal priest Edgar L. Sanford. Her first book, "The Healing Light," is often considered a classic in its field. Stimulating and Inspiring

Agnes Sanford has inspired many healing ministries including those of Francis MacNutt, Ruth Carter Stapleton and Jim Glennon.
Her message is clear and scriptually sound. God can work through us if we only let Him. There are certain things we can learn which will help us to seek God's healing love and that is what Agnes Sanford describes in this stimulating book.

MISSING PARENTS OF A BASKETBALL STAR

Brenda Slaughter is the preeminent star of a new women's professional basketball league scheduled to make its debut. Sports agent Myron Bolitar is asked to watch her, as she may be subject to threats related to her father Horace, whom she has fired as her agent, and who taught Myron, a former star hoopster himself, how to play the game. Brenda is black, smart, funny, independent, and at the same time she is about to embark on a pro career, studying to be a doctor.

Horace, who had a physical confrontation with his daughter when he was terminated is suddenly missing. But there is a larger family issue. Brenda's mother, Anita, had abandoned her daughter and Horace twenty years ago, several months after finding the body of Elizabeth Bradford, the late wife of a current candidate for Governor, Arthur Bradford. The woman slipped or fell off a balcony early one morning. Anita worked for the Bradford's as a maid, and when she disappeared, the drop dead beautiful domestic cleaned out Horace's life savings of just over five figures. Horace never found anyone else. The only person Anita has spoken to in all these years is her sister-in-law Mabel, and only then a couple of times.

While second generation money, Arthur Bradford plays rough. And the family has over the years, put cops in their pocket and thugs on their payroll. There is a coverup of something somewhere. This becomes apparent when Brenda's dormitory room is ransacked and letters from her mother are stolen, Myron takes it upon themself to find both of her parents, and unravel the complicated intertwining of families seemingly so disparate they would hardly be entangled so deeply.

There is additional motivation for Myron beyond getting the opportunity to represent a budding star. He finds himself incredibly attracted to Brenda, his heart leaping skyward whenever he is with her. That of course puts him in turmoil, for he is not the cheating kind, and lives with his girlfriend Jessica, beautiful and talented, but selfish in ways that Brenda could never be. Myron is oriented towards family, Jessica is jaundiced in that regard, not growing up ijn a stable, loving environment.

Those familiar with Myron Bolitar will recognize that he is different from the usual cop or private investigator. Myron does not keep his emotions within himself, he displays them openly to his friends, the strangely cold and violence-prone investment counselor Win, his colleague and best buddy Esperanza Diaz, and to his girlfriend, whom he loves but cannot get to stay in one place.

Harlan Coben seems to have seized the banner first raised by Ross MacDonald in the Lew Archer mysteries. Tangled and tattered families and deep secrets immersed in bloodlines from years past are at the root of the Bolitar mysteries. In One False Move, there is even a link between Myron's own father and the Bradfords, one that put Myron in danger when he was a child. Moral complexity and ambiguity hover over the story, as Myron has to deal with his feelings, many of them uncertain, on race, love, family, loyalty and personal ideals. And different from MacDonald, Coben creates characters, that are sharply witty as well. Only Bolitar could stick a sharp verbal needle into a thug who threatens him, even when the lout has a clear advantage.

Coben is a superior talent who keeps making Bolitar more interesting all the time.

Coben strikes again

Once again, Harlan Coben keeps the reader on the edge of his seat with the Myron Bolitar novel One False Move. Coben brilliantly twists his tale of murder and mystery, and as he always does, leads you to believe you have the case solved and then he slams you in the face with a surprise ending that hits you like a baseball bat, except your jaw is left in tact enough to hang open while you read the final pages. There perhaps hasn't been a finer murder-solving duo of Myron and Win since Holmes and Watson, as yet another page turner keeps you engrossed until the very end.

HARLAN COBEN COMES THROUGH....AS USUAL

I previously read one of Harlan Coben's books and was not that impressed for some reason, but something also told me to give him another try and I was certainly glad that I did. Harlan Coben is clearly one of the top tier/premier mystery writers for several reasons which are evident in this book as well as all of his Myron Bolitar books. Firstly, his style of writing makes the reading flow - it is not at all tedious. Secondly, his plots are intricate and interesting without being overly complex or bewildering. Thirdly, his characters are highly entertaining - Myron Bolitar is the sports rep/investigator/detective, and Win (Windsor Horne Lockwood III - for those who are into formalities) is the muscle - Win is incredibly wealthy, is not overtly threatening due to the fact that he is only five feet ten inches or thereabout, very fastidious and preppy in his appearance, but he is totally lethal - he lives in a world of black and white, no gray areas, and when warranted, acts first and asks questions or contemplates later - if ever. Myron and Win are very similar to Spenser and Hawk of Robert B. Parker as well as Elvis Cole and Joe Pike of Robert Crais. Very much like Spenser and Hawk, the repartee between Myron and Win is very entertaining. This book, in particular, also had a very intricate plot where you do not really know the killer until very near the end. Highly recommended.

Grade 3-6-- Wayside School is 30 stories high with only one room on each floor. On the top floor is Mrs. Jewls' class, where order has been abandoned in favor of nonsense and silliness. Wayside School is Falling Down

Do you like action, comedy, laughs, and good times? If you do then read Wayside School is Falling Down by Louis Sachar. It's about the funny and strange things that happen in Wayside school. It's one of the funniest books I have ever read.
An example of one of the funny moments was when the author wrote a whole chapter backwards! I realized the chapter was backwards after I read it forwards. What was especially interesting and funny though was that the girl in the chapter does everything backwards.
Another funny instance is that the school is thirty floors high. What's even funnier is there is only one classroom on each floor! Also there is no nineteenth floor. A different funny thing is in another chapter a girl goes on the nineteenth floor even though there isn't one.
I enjoyed the book very much. It was funny and each chapter wasn't long. You should read this book if you don't like reading. This is because it is almost like reading a book of jokes. It's not long and it's funny. You should read this book.

Hilarious and should be read with your kids!

This book is down-right funny. Goofy even! I think it is one of the funnier, insane books for kids out there. Each chapter brings a whole new meaning to fun as you read about all the students in Mrs. Jewls's class. Trust me when I say you will love it! If you really want to have a good time while reading a book, this one is for you.

Does Johnny Hate to Read?

Louis Sachar has found a way to combine a child's wacky way of viewing the world, clever plays on words, phrases, and chapters(!!), and a cast of quirky characters to produce a set of books that will coax any reader to keep on reading.
The third of his Wayside School series, Sachar turns the school upside-down, and, in the process, guarantees entertaining reading for adult and child alike. I particularly enjoy the audio version of the book, since the "voice" on tape successfully makes each character's persona his own.
This is a book that your child (and you!) will find yourself reading over and over, discovering new meanings in different passages each time.
Mr. Sachar, keep writing!!
