A very accessible introduction to Agile

I bought Agile Project Management for Dummies yesterday and I have read most of it in the past 24 hours. It's a really easy read and makes Agile (and the specific approach of Scrum) very accessible. The comparisons with Waterfall are very helpful, as you really have to shift your mindset to a new way of thinking. I especially enjoyed the case study example that illustrated the process with a simple mobile banking project. It made all the artifacts make sense to me.

This should be mandatory reading for everyone from CIOs, Product Managers, Heads of PMOs and everyone involved in software and application development. Adopting Agile looks straightforward at a project level, but Mark points to some of the complexities of enterprise wide implementations towards the end of the book. It's as well to know what it's going to take to maximize the benefits of Agile.

I've purchased many "...for Dummies" books in the past but this is the first one I've actually read cover-to-cover. If you are familiar with the "...for Dummies" series, you know what you're going to get: a nuts and bolts, start with the basics, type of book. Having knowledge of and experience in the traditional waterfall project methodology for software development and delivery, I wanted to learn more about Agile Project Methodology but I wanted to make sure I started with a solid foundation. If your plan is the same as mine, this book fits the bill. It begins with background information (Ch. 1), then the Agile Manifesto and the 12 Agile Principles (Ch. 2) and builds on that each chapter thereafter. Besides the key terms, definitions, project team roles, Agile in practice, etc.... this book delves into topics such as procurement, working with vendors, and project cost and budget considerations specific to Agile projects. If you read from cover-to-cover, you will notice some repetition in the book; intended for those who use the book as a reference - read a section here, chapter there, skip ahead. I didn't mind it. In fact, I used it to my learning advantage. I feel confident in what I have learned here, so much so, I feel I am ready to move on and tackle heftier Agile-specific topics

Don't be fooled by the "Dummies" title; this is one of those "For Dummies" books that's intelligent and thorough. It's a very good introduction to Agile principles and the Scrum framework. It works as both a ground-up training manual if you're totally new to the field and as a reference if you've been working with Agile for a while. I'm a Certified Scrum Master and have been working with Agile approaches like Scrum and Kanban for over a year now and have been able to find some great tips and solutions to challenges I've come across lately in this book. I've already recommended it to my coworkers and some colleagues who are about to take their Scrum certification class.

great figures

Wow this is dense. I am using this book to study during my allergy and immunology fellowship. It is exceedingly dense for my purposes, and the authors sometimes go off on what I consider to be unnecessary tangents. However, the figures are excellent and its saving grace. Overall, I am pleased with this book. It is a nice reference.

I am less enthusiastic.

I'm less enthusiastic than the other reviewers.

I mean, I really have to laugh on some level. The difficult people I deal with would brush this kind of stuff aside with an effortless swish of the finger. The book curates a number of really very basic ideas that we'd all be familiar with in any case (e.g., using "I" phrases), and then gives a short story/skit in which the technique is demonstrated. And it's just comical. The characters in these skits are not very tenacious, they are impossibly logical and empathetic, they instantly capitulate, they speak in strange, inorganic, stilted ways, and then they have a group hug moment when it's all over. These kinds of epiphanies occur, in the real world, only after Godot does.

Anyone who has dealt with truly caustic personalities in the workplace knows that this is a pipe dream.

For example, the protagonist (who has been viciously slandered, or outmaneuvered, or ignored, or impugned) says: "Can't you see how what you did there affects me, and even though I now understand that you did mean it in that way, that it still will upset me?" And in Ms. Evenson's universe, the respondant now says: "Yes, indeed, I can see how that would have upset you, and now that my eyes are opened, I will be ever so careful in the future to proactively leverage your feelings. I now see that we are equally important partners in this enterprise, and that I have been hateful. Let us now hug, and seal the bond between us, wherein we now understand each other's equally valid life choices!!!"

Anyone that works in a place where important things are done (and hence, has aggressive personalities) knows that this is not reality.

I am disappointed in the book. There was nothing here, really, that I could benefit from. It is hard for me to imagine the kind of flaccid, vapid, workplace in which this kind of schlock could be relevant guidance. It is, to me, a fictionalized account of what could be effective in a completely different universe from the one in which we live.

I am sure Ms. Evenson is a wonderful person, but she couldn't last ten seconds in any workplace I have been in.

Crammed with savvy phrases, lucid commentaries, and sharp questions, this book has helped me deal with a few "difficult people". Thank you, Renee Evenson, for writing this sensible how-to book. Quality human relationships matter.

Good start - Poor finish

The first five or six chapters are interesting but after this the book gets very repetitive. I was hoping for some real insights and experiences about the times Gates spent as Secretary but most of the writing was limited to broad generalisations about people and events. I gave up on the book before the end.

Good read...although somewhat repetitive.

This book is a good read. It is really a bunch of vignettes of Robert Gates experiences and little teaching lessons associated. After a while it does get a bit repetitive, but all in all quite a good read. Recommend if you work with people and aim to be a leader.
