Good for command line lookup.
By Kahntraddiction
As the title states, if you have questions about certain commands you can easily look them up in this little guide.

Only complaint is that (and again with ciscopress) they don't offer you a digital copy. There are other companies that give you a CD loaded with FREE extra content and a PDF copy of the book.

Good Quick Command Reference
By Nathan Gilliam, VCP
This book has been a great easy reference for learning Cisco switch commands during a new datacenter project. It's well organized by function. As an improvement, I would suggest expanding on real-world syntax examples.

Good content, terrible Kindle format
By Downingtown
The Kindle version of this book has every single table of commands formatted as an image, and not text. That means it cannot be scaled, and reading the book on a PC results in very difficult to read tables. The tables are the real content of the book - ALL of the commands reside in these tables, and not a single bit of it is formatted as text. Other books in this series, like CCNA Portable Command Guide, have at least the vast majority of tables formatted as scalable text. This book is almost entirely image-based. Hopefully this will be changed in an updated version.

Making Your Case: The Art of Persuading Judges, by Antonin Scalia, Bryan A. Garner

In their professional lives courtroom lawyers must do these two things well: speak persuasively and write persuasively. In this noteworthy book, two of the most noted legal writers of our day Justice Antonin Scalia and Bryan A. Garner systematically present every important idea about judicial persuasion in a fresh, entertaining way. Making Your Case: The Art of Persuading Judges is a guide for novice and experienced litigators alike. It covers the essentials of sound legal reasoning, including how to develop the syllogism that underlies any argument. From there the authors explain the art of brief-writing, especially what to include and what to omit, so that you can induce the judge to focus closely on your arguments. Finally, they show what it takes to succeed in oral argument. The opinions of Justice Scalia are legendary for their sharp insights, biting wit, and memorable phrasing. The writings of Bryan A. Garner, editor in chief of Black s Law Dictionary®, are respected inside and outside legal circles for their practical guidance on the art of writing and advocacy. Together the Scalia-Garner team has produced a fresh, innovative approach to a timeless topic.

Excellent general guide for appellate practice, but...
By Maisy fan
If you're a trial lawyer handling your first appeal, you should absolutely read this book cover-to-cover. I've practiced solely appellate law for ten years, seen hundreds of appellate arguments, written hundreds of briefs and argued nearly a hundred cases, attended national trainings on appellate practice, and taught hundreds of new attorneys how to handle their first appellate case. I agree with almost everything the authors have to say-- and what credible authors!

My disagreements:
1) Never summarize your case in the "conclusion" section of the brief. They advise this, and note that many disagree with this. I emphatically disagree with it. A conclusion in the body of the point, at its end, may do very well, but the so-called "prayer for relief" section needs to be one sentence that says precisely what you want the court to do, and nothing else. This way the court knows exactly where to flip to find the remedy you're requesting, and doesn't have to parse a page of text to find it.

2) "And its progeny" is hackneyed? What are you supposed to say? This case and all the cases which grew out of it? Sprung from it? Were decided after it and based on it in some way? Terms which they call "hackneyed" are often the quickest and most precise way to phrase something. So just ignore that paragraph.

3) They "skirt" the issue, by failing to skirt the issue, of women's dress. They only say, "wear dark colors." The new female attorneys do not believe me when I say judges expect them to wear skirt suits to court. I've seen women show up in red shirts under striped pantsuits worn with sandals. They believed they looked professional, but really, they had lost ten points in credibility already. It would have been nice to have a Supreme Court justice address female dress in the courtroom.

4) Quoting. They give the impression that you should never quote, and you should always paraphrase. I disagree. In my opinion, you should have a quote for the standard of review, and a quote for everything that might be controverted. I will summarize general case law into a nice smooth paragraph. But the standard of review is always a series of quotes and cites, and anything that I think the judges might doubt I quote (e.g., if a juvenile invoked right to counsel before being certified, that invocation went poof after they were certified, so until it was reasserted, the cops were free to read him his rights and question him-- that needs quotes.)

5) Sexist language. They disagree on how to deal with this. What you can't do, with all due respect, Justice Scalia, is use "man" for everything, because then you sound like one of those 1950's women-hating guys in horn-rimmed glasses. All the women in the room will think you a caveman. Most sexist language can be avoided easily and grammatically. Where it can't, I find it helpful to just use the gender of the main party in the controversy.

6) Drafting the brief. They assume you have a month to work on your case. They might as well advise you to have your fairy god-mother finish it for you. So, follow their advice, but squeeze it into the three days you actually have. E.g., instead of writing out an outline of your entire case, when you start your point, write your point relied on, then make a descriptive heading for each section of your case (e.g., Facts, Standard of Review, Law on admitting a breath test, the state failed to lay a proper foundation for the admission of the test results, the other evidence failed to prove intoxication, conclusion.) Then you've outlined your case and written your headings all at once.

7) In a criminal case, it's perfectly fine for the state to call the appellant, "the appellant," throughout the case. It's not "too cute," as the authors say, because the state is always "the state," so their side is already depersonalized. And, it makes it really easy for the appellate court to remember who's who.

8) Never use footnotes for anything you want the court to read. I completely agree with Scalia's writing on this issue.

9) In oral argument, if you're through, you need to sit down. Now. They talk about having a big lengthy end summary. That may be required in the United States Supreme Court, but it's pretty ridiculous elsewhere. My shortest argument was forty seconds long. (Yes, I won, and yes, they were visibly relieved.) I almost always leave half or more of my time unused. And do, do, do, say, "If there are no further questions," pause briefly and make eye contact with all judges, "we ask that you" and state what you want the court to do (remember that one sentence in your prayer for relief?). That's a much more effective close to your argument than trying to summarize your whole case for judges who just wish you'd sit down.

So, I say definitely read this book-- even experienced counsel will find something in it that can improve their practice. But also realize this book is written for a general appellate audience, and especially the US Supreme Court, and therefore needs to be tweaked to fit practice in your specialty.

Persuasion from a legal point of view
By Tom Carpenter
I am not a lawyer, but I love reading about persuasion and influence. This book caught my attention out of left field, but it certainly added a lot of value to my understanding of persuasion from a logical and argumentative point of view.

Most of the books I've read on persuasion focus on the emotional appeals that move people and mention that you need to give a rational argument for the decision so the persuadee can feel good about it. This book teaches you how to make that rational argument, but it does more than that. It teaches you how to frame the argument before it is made so that it will be more persuasive when it is made. The portion focused on the development of the syllogism was particularly interesting.

Definitely a book that you will want to read whether your are in the legal arena or not - if you want to know how to influence and persuade.

If you need to persuade a judge, you need this book
By Andrew M. Bianca
Whether or not you agree with Justice Scalia's opinions from the Supreme Court, this book as a primer on briefs and oral argument is excellent. I wish that I had this book for moot court. The brief writing section was far better than any of the books I had to help me. The oral presentation section identified solutions to problems that frustrated me. If you are not a lawyer you will likely find the oral argument section interesting and helpful, but find the minutia of the brief writing section boring. As a lawyer, I will reread this book from time to time.

Justice Scalia recognizes there are other viewpoints; he discusses them but then explains why his view is better.

The book presents all viewpoints and follows with their own and why theirs is better. For example, the book points out that although they believes underlining is a crude throwback to the typewriter , Bluebook approves the use of underlining. The book states that underlining is unnecessary in the 21st century with a word processor. They follow with suggesting that Bluebook should be revised. The book suggests using italics where you would have used underlining. They add that very limited use of italics is far better than liberal use. Justice Scalia's differences of opinions extend to his coauthor.

Bryan Garner, author of Garner's Modern American Usage, The Elements of Legal Style and editor in chief of Black's Law Dictionary did not agree with Justice Scalia on all points. Some section headings state a definite rule, followed by "or not." For example: "Consider using contractions occasionally--or not." These sections take the form of majority opinion vs. minority opinion. Mr. Garner's opinion is presented, Justice Scalia follows with his opinion and his analysis on why Mr. Garner was wrong and why Justice Scalia is right.

The book is organized logically, and with brevity.
The book in its 245 pages discusses:
* the general purposes of oral argument,
* legal reasoning, brief writing, and finally
* the crafting of the oral argument itself.

It discusses these topics more thoroughly than some books that are three times its size. Subsections have a clear heading and to the point discussion. Most subsections, although fully treated, are one to two pages long, some less than a page.

Finally
The book shows how to tailor your arguments for a singular audience, the judge, distinguished even from arguing before a jury. It gives tactics to use with difficult judges, lazy judges, and their law clerks. It gives the view from the bench when the lawyer reacts to bad questions from the judge. It describes the likely outcomes, and it offers way to avoid confrontation, while still making your argument. It is a good book.

Review
"A thorough, thought-out treatise that offers new ways of looking at comics and film. It will take its place in the annals of exceptional comic book/film scholarship...essential." --Choice.

"This unique work on popular culture is a seamless, well-constructed, deeply researched, sharply written, and politically insightful academic book." --Religious Studies Review

"DiPaolo's command of real-world politics as well as the broad knowledge of so many superhero stories (with "superhero" also defined in a very broad sense) really sells the project. I don't think there is another book like it, and my hope is that it will inspire fanboys who love the superhero narratives to also take more of an interest in the political intrigues and relationships that genuinely affect our lives." --Will Brooker, Kingston University, author of Batman Unmasked and Using the Force.

Dipaolo's book satisfies intellectual curiosity on many levels
By Thomas J. Molinaro
The book jacket features a picture of Iron Man and the word "Superheroes" in all caps, but there is so much more within the covers. While Dipaolo offers a rich helping of superheroes in comics, television and film, each of his chapters opens a virtual cornucopia of America's social and political history, with a primary focus on attitudes about war and politics, as promised in the title. Dipaolo weaves a delightful and informative web of connections between popular culture and politics with crystal clarity and lively writing informed by extensive research. If you're interested in where we are and how we got here, this is a must read.

Very Interesting Read
By Meg
This is a fascinating application of politics into superhero comics. The chapter titles are interesting and hysterical. Examples include, "President Obama vs. the Zombie Apocalypse" and " The Punisher as Murderous Immigration Officer and Vietnam War Veteran." The content is definitely biased, but he provides strong evidence for his statements. It covers all figures from the X-men to Thor to the Green Lantern to James Bond.

In his appeal to the world, the Dalai Lama outlines a new secular ethics as the foundation of a peaceful century. The answer will come not from religions, but from people embracing an ethics that spans all differences. A provocative and emboldening piece of writing by a humble and eminent man of our times.

Crazy Stupid Money (Kindle Single), by Rachel Shukert

In this brave new age of constant sharing, there isn't much that's still taboo. On social media and beyond, we dish on all aspects of our personal lives: our relationships, our children, our sex lives, our health. But there's one thing that no one ever mentions-- our money.

How much do we actually have? Who makes it? And how does that make us feel about ourselves? These are the uncomfortable questions that Rachel Shukert managed to avoid for years, buffered from the gnawing anxiety of her patched-together freelance living by the comfortable salary of her loving and successful husband. But when a sudden change in circumstances forced her to step up and start supporting her family for the first time, she had to face the depth of her phobias about money for the first time, and truth about the damage they had caused to her relationship.

It wasn't pretty. Plates were thrown. Police were called. Accountants were vomited on -- or at least, near. And a marriage was pushed to the breaking point by the curious power that money -- or the lack of it -- has in our lives.

Hilarious, painful, and searingly honest, CRAZY STUPID MONEY tells the hard truth about all the things that married people (not to mention not-quite-successful creative freelancers) never talk about but desperately wish someone would. The story of how one couple broke themselves down and struggled to come back together again, it's an unflinching look at what we talk about when we DON'T talk about money -- and how alone it makes us feel.

Money, money, money...
By Sarah Zucker
Nothing funny! (Except this single definitely is, but, you know-- Abba)

Longtime fan of Rachel's writing (granted, I'm her target demo to the point of practically being a mirror), and am really taken with how her voice has maintained its consistent zing while grappling with more complex (read: "grown up") issues. (Still plenty of musical theater references, though...never change.)

This single was as cathartic to read as it must have been to write: the best weapon we have against the fiscal isolation of the freelance lifestyle is commiseration with fellow laborers (Rachel, would you like to be deemed a modern Emma Goldman? Is it still cool to be a communist?)

Absolutely appreciated the unflinching intimacy of the revelations within. A great little nugget of an afternoon read to take your mind off of where your next check is coming from...or at the very least, make you feel that you're not alone in this all-consuming concern.

Great writing but felt depressed afterward.
By Amazon Customer
I really appreciated the authors willingness to expose her emotions. It was very brave and I have enormous respect for her for doing so. I found the book extremely well written but it was mostly about anxiety, rage, emotional violence, persecution, desperation and a destruction of well being wrapped up in a humorous style of writing. The deeper message was addressing the fear of not surviving and not feeling supported and looked after, which I am sure we all feel at some level. After a while, as I was really getting into the book, it felt as if I was reading about a traumatic, extremely painful experience of overwrought, damaging emotions and a disintegrating marriage rather than a funny, quirky tale. It's a really sad story about one persons fear of not surviving.

An amazing, short, and emotional story about the biggest taboo in our lives.
By Divergentnate
Money surrounds us with so much emotion. It is a taboo that keeps us from being closer to the ones we love. This is a powerful tale about anxiety over money and the fight to maintain a relationship. I could not put it down. It was the perfect book for me right now. Thank you for writing this and making me feel normal.

The Happiness Advantage: The Seven Principles of Positive Psychology That Fuel Success and Performance at Work, by Shawn Achor

Our most commonly held formula for success is broken.

Conventional wisdom holds that if we work hard we will be more successful, and if we are more successful, then we'll be happy. If we can just find that great job, win that next promotion, lose those five pounds, happiness will follow. But recent discoveries in the field of positive psychology have shown that this formula is actually backward: Happiness fuels success, not the other way around. When we are positive, our brains become more engaged, creative, motivated, energetic, resilient, and productive at work. This isn't just an empty mantra. This discovery has been repeatedly borne out by rigorous research in psychology and neuroscience, management studies, and the bottom lines of organizations around the globe.

In The Happiness Advantage, Shawn Achor, who spent over a decade living, researching, and lecturing at Harvard University, draws on his own research-including one of the largest studies of happiness and potential at Harvard and others at companies like UBS and KPMG - to fix this broken formula. Using stories and case studies from his work with thousands of Fortune 500 executives in 42 countries, Achor explains how we can reprogram our brains to become more positive in order to gain a competitive edge at work.

Isolating seven practical, actionable principles that have been tried and tested everywhere from classrooms to boardrooms, stretching from Argentina to Zimbabwe, he shows us how we can capitalize on the Happiness Advantage to improve our performance and maximize our potential.

Great information - and fun to read!
By stewart b clifford
I read a lot of business books. Most of them are filled with helpful information. Frankly, most of them are also a little on the dry. "The Happiness Advantage" is different. It is filled with fascinating research and great ideas, and it is also a hoot to read. I found myself laughing out loud as I read the book.

Shawn Achor explains the latest research he and his colleagues in the field of positive psychology have conducted. The results are fascinating:

1) Our brains work better when they are "happy."

2) There are concrete things we can do to make our brains "happier."

3) We can also overcome our inclination to procrastinate and put off these exercises. (I found this section to be particularly interesting since I am a procrastinator).

4) When our brains are at "happy" that positivity will ripple out to others and can raise the productivity.

Give this book a look. The research shows that we (and our colleagues at work) can be more productive. And, if we are "happier" our boss will also perceive us as more positive, trustworthy, sincere and successful. Wow! And who wouldn't want to be happier at work - and at home?

A Year Later
By NCC
I saw Shawn Anchor's presentation on PBS where he explained a simple 5 minute technique called 'The 3 Gratitudes'.

I was brought up in a culture of pessimism and had 50 years of experience that was so deeply entrenched that I decided that I would be the perfect candidate for experimentation with such a simple exercise.

I've never had much luck trying to change my 'default mode' of negative self-concept (no matter how much therapy I've had or how many self-help books I've read) so I was really on a mission to prove this man and his ideas wrong! I listened to the whole book on tape to make sure I was doing it as explained in the television presentation and this is what I did:

It takes exactly 21 days to create a new neural pathway so you have to do the exercise everyday for 3 weeks. If you skip or forget to do it, you just keep going until you've done the exercise 21 times. If you find you're missing a lot it's just your old self trying to maintain the status quo. Tell yourself that it's less than 5 minutes a day and that you're out to prove the experiment wrong! (if you really find that you're resistant).

You want to find the part of your routine in the morning where you have a moment (well, 5 minutes) (when you're having a cup of tea or coffee for instance). Keep a notebook in that spot (at your desk or kitchen table). You must write out the experiment.

1). THE THREE GRATITUDES: Write down 3 things you are grateful for (no matter how simple or small). At first I could only write about the cup of tea I was drinking! It can be any three things big or small...As you get into this you'll get more creative and become strangely exuberant about what you feel grateful for.

2). THE DOUBLER: Next you want to take one of those three things and elaborate on it a bit (just a few sentences) OR pick a new gratitude to elaborate on. If you have more than a little time, write as much as you like.

3). THREE SMILES: Smile at 3 living creatures today (guys have to be a little careful about this one...ladies, it's easier for you but just be genuine and really smile!). Smile at your doggie, smile at your kitty, co-workers, toll-booth workers, babies, kids, old folks...

4). THE FUN-15: This one is the optional one but will speed up the process: You want to get 15 minutes of fresh air and exercise...a lovely walk with some sunshine if possible (if you're NOT up to this yet, you can add it in after 21 days when you feel better). This can be done at any time of the day, afternoon, evening (separate from the notebook work). If you already work out, you're all set.

5). CONNECT: Connect with one person today. It can even be an electronic connection...so, if you email your Mom or text a friend or your Sister, it still works!

That's all you have to do for 21 days. I started doing this about a year ago last February and after 21 days (I did not skip because I was out to prove the author wrong) I felt better. I felt a lot better. I decided that It had to be the placebo effect so I kept doing this exercise for 3 months! After 3 months I figured there was something to this neural construction thing (or whatever it's called) and I kept doing 'The 3 Gratitudes' straight through till August. I kept waiting for the music to stop but it didn't. In September I decided to experiment and I stopped doing the exercise just to see whether I would go back to default (after 7 months of being a happy, optimistic, creative and grateful person).

It has now been 7 more months of NOT doing The 3 Gratitudes and I've maintained 70-80% of the gain.

This month I have started doing the exercise again just because I WANT that 20% back! The only time I've slipped back into feelings of real pessimism was one week when I had the flu but it lifted as soon as I started recovering. It is interesting to note that the old neural networks still exist and don't go away but if you REPLACE them with better ones you can override the old belief system.

I've told my son, family members and a few friends about this marvelous phenomenon but no one is interested. I'm sharing this because it would be wonderful for me if someone could benefit from trying this too. I think people are reluctant because it sounds so corny! almost unbelievable and possibly outside some imagined comfort zone. All I know is I have a studio full of paintings and I feel kind of like that exuberant art-making kid before anyone told her that her world-view was wrong. If anyone has luck with this please leave me a message...I want to hear! P.S. Thank you Shawn Anchor.

Riveting research gets a little stifled by the author’s pride.
By Simple Citizen
Did you know Shawn Achor went to Harvard?
No really. I’m quite certain of it. He only mentioned it about 27 times in this book, so it was kind of subtle, but if you read between the lines you too can pick up this hidden gem.
I promise not to mention it again – because it was the only glaring annoyance in this otherwise useful book.

This book could also be called: The Placebo Effect.
It is very very VERY real. People dismiss the effect of thought on our physical body – and it’s HUGE.

Thought is what leads to hormone release. Perception of fear releases adrenaline. Perception of happiness releases Dopamine. This book discusses Oxytocin and Cortisol and many other hormones and it points out the absolutely real physiological effects of each.

Doing the exact same physical activity, with the thought that you are exercising – leads to more weight loss and increased muscle gain. HORMONES matter. THOUGHT matters.
Being “happy” can kill pain better than narcotics. Exercising can cure depression better than antidepressants.
Being Happy decreases heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and many other PHYSICAL diseases.
This is not about positive affirmations or “think a happy thought.” This book is not Peter Pan advice to help us fly away from tragic lives.
This book is science. Research study after research study proving that our mental outlook on life makes a HUGE difference in our physical health, our finances, our family, our friends, our entire existence.

This book is very worthwhile – because the author doesn’t just say “Get Happy” – He gives you specific tasks and practices to accomplish it.

My favorite chapter was “Principle #6: The 20 Second Rule”
It talks all about "activation energy."
It takes very little energy to keep a signal running along a nerve. But it takes a burst of energy to start the flow. You have to provide enough “activation energy” to start it. Kind of like getting a car rolling on a flat road. You have to put in a ton of energy to push the car from a dead stop but once it’s going it doesn’t take much to keep it going.
It is the same way with habits. Habits are very hard to start. Forming them can be a nightmare.
The answer – DECREASE the activation energy. Make it as simple as possible to do the habit each day.
What ever you want to do: put it in your natural path. Take away all need for decision making. Make it harder NOT to do the new thing.

If you want to exercise first thing in the morning – sleep in your gym clothes.
If you want to learn to play the guitar – keep the guitar in the middle of the room where you will almost run into it every time you walk through your house.
The same is true for habits you want to STOP. Make it much much HARDER to do the thing you want to stop.
If you check your e-mail WAY too often and you want to stop – delete your shortcut, and don’t let the computer remember your password.
Make it require time, energy, and a whole lot of work to do the WRONG thing.

This chapter is genius. The entire book is good.

I recommend it.

Here are two of my favorite quotes from the book:
"Common sense is not common action." - p. 146
"Coercing employees into awkward icebreakers or forced bonding activities, like making everyone at a meeting share something about their private lives, only breeds disconnection and mistrust. Better that these moments happen organically - which they will if the environment is right. The best leaders give their employees the space and time to let moments of social connection develop on their own" - p. 193

Hollywood's Last Golden Age: Politics, Society, and the Seventies Film in America, by Jonathan Kirshner

Between 1967 and 1976 a number of extraordinary factors converged to produce an uncommonly adventurous era in the history of American film. The end of censorship, the decline of the studio system, economic changes in the industry, and demographic shifts among audiences, filmmakers, and critics created an unprecedented opportunity for a new type of Hollywood movie, one that Jonathan Kirshner identifies as the "seventies film." In Hollywood's Last Golden Age, Kirshner shows the ways in which key films from this period―including Chinatown, Five Easy Pieces, The Graduate, and Nashville, as well as underappreciated films such as The Friends of Eddie Coyle, Klute, and Night Moves―were important works of art in continuous dialogue with the political, social, personal, and philosophical issues of their times.

These "seventies films" reflected the era's social and political upheavals: the civil rights movement, the domestic consequences of the Vietnam war, the sexual revolution, women's liberation, the end of the long postwar economic boom, the Shakespearean saga of the Nixon Administration and Watergate. Hollywood films, in this brief, exceptional moment, embraced a new aesthetic and a new approach to storytelling, creating self-consciously gritty, character-driven explorations of moral and narrative ambiguity. Although the rise of the blockbuster in the second half of the 1970s largely ended Hollywood’s embrace of more challenging films, Kirshner argues that seventies filmmakers showed that it was possible to combine commercial entertainment with serious explorations of politics, society, and characters’ interior lives.

From Booklist
The book’s subtitle pretty much gives away the thesis here: American films of the 1970s were influenced by revolutions both social and political. The author redefines the seventies to encompass the late 1960s and to exclude the late 1970s, allowing him to focus on the emerging filmmakers and their works: Penn, Ashby, Mazursky, Scorcese, De Palma, Coppola, Rafelson, Cassavetes, and so on. Ardent students of the history of American cinema will no doubt experience a serious case of been-there, done-that (as the author admits, and his extensive bibliography elaborates, this is not a new subject), but, on the other hand, readers unfamiliar with the subject should find the book a real education. The author, a professor of government at Cornell, draws a clear correlation between the rather startling shift in American filmmaking (increased violence and sexual themes, more overt anti-establishment motifs, the rise of the antihero) and political and social events of the 1950s and early ’60s (such as the sexual revolution, the war in Vietnam, the assassinations of key political figures, the Communist witch hunts). Libraries with active film-history collections will want to add this one. --David Pitt

Review

Jonathan Kirshner, a Cornell University political scientist with a compelling interest in film, argues that this decade (1967–1976) was Hollywood's last golden age. . . . [S]uch classics as The Graduate (1967), Bonnie and Clyde (1967), Klute (1971), Midnight Cowboy (1969), Chinatown (1974), and Shampoo (1975) are subjected to intensive examination. These "close readings" are both the core and the strength of Kirshner's book (p. 2). They afford readers new ways of looking at these films, new insights into the conscious and unconscious motives of the filmmakers, and new frameworks for grasping the meanings and actions of the characters. . . . I found his book a joy to read and a refreshing reintroduction to the motion pictures of my youth."―Jerold Simmons, Journal of American History (December 2013)

"Renewed interest in Hollywood film of the 1970s, evident in documentaries, popular books, and a burgeoning reissue market, has generated myth and hagiography, and Hollywood's Last Golden Age supplies an important corrective to this tendency by substantiating the contexts for key films of the period. Readers of Hollywood's Last Golden Age will likewise be awakened to the ways that the political rhythms and feeling of this time reverberated through American screens, the way that cinema both announced and brought audiences into the 1970s."―Nathan Holmes,Journal of American Studies

"Kirshner's writing is lively and informative, and the book excels when he discusses long forgotten seventies films (such as, The Friends of Eddie Coyle, Mickey and Nicky, and The Yakuza), suggest new ways to view popular films (although Michael Carelone as a Nixonian character in The Godfather, Part II could have been taken further), or focuses on topics often ignored in surveys of New Hollywood (the rising skepticism many felt towards capitalism, as discussed in relation to Nashville, Network, and Shampoo). . . . Kirshner's book expands on many themes discussed elsewhere, but his skillful analysis and solid research, especially pertaining to the cultural politics of the era, serves as a great introduction to this rich era of filmmaking."―Julie Lobalzo Wright, The Journal of Popular Culture (October 2013)

"Kirshner . . . offers insightful, well-written interpretations of some two dozen films―with briefer references to others―that date from 1967 to 1976. . . . For Kirshner, the primary characteristics of this golden age include a 'moral ambiguity' that portrays the world in shades of gray rather than in black and white; plots driven by imperfect protagonists rather than by frenetic action; a concern for social and political implications; visual styles that were 'often shaky, darker, filtered, or grainy'; and a desire among filmmakers to create serious, meaningful works of art. A useful appendix lists 100 top films from this period, including 20 deemed canonical."―Choice (May 2013)

"Kirshner's commentary on these and other films is stimulating. He also provides a useful appendix of one hundred Seventies films. Kirshner's book provides intriguing insights for anyone interested in the relation between film and wider culture."―The Journal of American Culture (September 2013)

"Thoughtful, interesting and engaging. . . . Kirshner succeeds at a difficult task. . . . [A}n excellent book, well argued, clearly written, and free of the theoretical jargon that plagues so much film scholarship."―Robert T. Schultz, History: Reviews of New Books (42:1, 2014)

"The author, a professor of government at Cornell, draws a clear correlation between the rather startling shift in American filmmaking (increased violence and sexual themes, more overt establishment motifs, the rise of the antihero) and political and social events of the 1950s and early '60s (such as the sexual revolution, the war in Vietnam, the assassinations of key political figures, the Communist witch hunts). Libraries with active film-history collections will want to add this one."―David Pitt, Booklist (1 November 2012)

"Hollywood's Last Golden Age is an absorbing, well-structured look at the decade of American films that many consider the last great era of thoughtful, politically motivated filmmaking before the rise of the blockbuster. . . . For those who are already well versed in the period it functions as a great refresher which will likely fill in gaps in one's knowledge, and make one reach towards the DVD shelf for a viewing of one of the many remarkable and still-resonant films of the '70s."―Ian Gilchrist, Reel Ink (March 2013)

"Jonathan Kirshner argues forcefully and astutely that questing, questioning films from the late '60s into the ’70s pushed their audience into consequential dialogue and debate. In like fashion, Kirshner’s book does the same to powerful ends: Hollywood’s Last Golden Age impels its readers to engage actively with the films and their times, and it opens a conversation that is fruitful and far reaching. It is a sharp, intelligent book about a moment when cinema really mattered aesthetically and politically."―Dana Polan, New York University, author of Scenes of Instruction

"Jonathan Kirshner writes fluidly on the political developments of the seventies and the history of the film industry in a way that will appeal to a wide range of readers who lived through the decade and experienced such films as Chinatown and The Godfather in a visceral way. This is the rare book that can be read with interest and profit by scholars and the general public alike–a valuable addition to the growing literature on the seventies and an interesting take on the films of that decade."―Edward D. Berkowitz, The George Washington University, author of Mass Appeal: The Formative Age of Movies, Radio, and TV

"In Hollywood's Last Golden Age, Jonathan Kirshner does a very good job of placing many now-classic movies in relation to the cultural ferment underway in the 1970s. Kirshner draws expertly on a huge range of sources to construct an elegant sociopolitical and cinematic history of the era."―Stephen Prince, Virginia Tech, author of Firestorm: American Film in the Age of Terrorism

"Neophytes and scholars alike will learn a great deal from Jonathan Kirshner's engaging story of the last great period of American filmmaking. Younger readers may benefit most of all from this clear-eyed analysis of the terrifically interesting cultural politics of the predigital visual world."―Thomas Borstelmann, E. N. and Katherine Thompson Professor of Modern World History, University of Nebraska–Lincoln, author of The 1970s

"I'm a little worried about my future"
By The Ginger Man
When I was in high school, my friends and I would go into Boston almost every weekend to see a movie. A new film directed by Mike Nichols or starring Dustin Hoffman would be an important event. The times were changing and this seemed somehow normal in our adolescent worldview. The movies not only reflected and reinforced those transformations but they put people our age on the right side of change and made us feel less alone and somehow superior. This was "the decade when movies mattered." Going to the movies has never been as important to me as during this time and, for the last thirty years or so, I have been vaguely dissatisfied in my experience viewing films. In a brief but well argued 200 pages, Jonathan Kirshner explains at last why this is so.

The period 1965-1975 constitutes for Kirshner a distinct and identifiable era of cinema. Movies in this period were transformed from linear stories with unambiguous morals to "self-consciously gritty explorations of complex episodes that challenged the received normative structure of society." The origin of this transition was based in multiple factors. The end of Hollywood censorship freed the form while industry changes gave opportunities to new and younger filmmakers. Significant social and political upheaval shocked institutional foundations creating novel avenues for questioning values. The history of the film craft influenced new approaches. French New Wave directors brought a more personal, less polished style to subjects often critical of authority while American noir films from another transitional period (1945-1955) focused on the underside of American affluence and power.

The result was a decade of character driven films often with a political text or subtext including an emphasis on moral ambiguity. The visual style was somehow less pristine, "shaky, darker, filtered or grainy." And they were aimed at a younger movie going audience who was also questioning its role in society. Widely divergent generational responses to these films were evident. In 1967, Bosley Crowther was the dean of American movie reviewers and had been writing about film for the New York Times since 1940. Panning Arthur Penn's Bonnie and Clyde in no less than three separate columns, he complained that the movie gratified "the preconceptions and illusions of young people who had come of age with the Beatles and Bob Dylan, the philosophy of doing your own thing and the notion that defying the Establishment was beautiful and brave." Crowther was relieved of his position by the Times before the year was over.

Kirshner spends much of the book analyzing movies from Hollywood's Last Golden Age. Films address generational conflict (The Graduate), war (MASH, Catch 22, Little Big Man), alienation (Five Easy Pieces, King of Marvin Gardens), paranoia about authority (Parrallax View, Klute), the poverty of affluence (Seconds, Carnal Knowledge), urban decay (Little Murders, Midnight Cowboy, Taxi Driver) and the demise of codes of behavior (Wild Bunch). The author provides as well a useful list of 100 films from 1965-1975 (although I take issue with omissions such as 1969's Putney Swope and They Shoot Horses, Don't They).

Hollywood's Last Golden Age is a concise, well written survey of the times and of its cinema. While I feel comfortable giving it a rating of 4 stars, I have to say that, for people such as myself who sat in those movie theaters from 65-75, this book can be almost impossible to put down and has five star value.

Captures the seventies political and moral culture, very good reading, no academic "cult studies" jargon.
By Joan A Filler
Kirschner proposes that as Hollywood was liberated from censorship that required moral certainty, (good guys and bad guys,) the serious directors, writers, and actors confronted moral ambiguity which was previously taboo. Now the subject of film was subject to debate. Starting his prologue with a tale from his youth on the joy of debating about films, ( "arguments like these were rarely resolved, but they were not really meant to be") the author identifies his idea of great film-- its ability to engage, to raise questions, to make you talk loud and long about it. Simultaneously with the end of the Hollywood Codes, political events and social changes in the 1960's engaged moral concerns. In the movies, as in life, the evenly illuminated world of 1950's transformed gradually into a murkier place with shadows, uncertain identities, unheroic protagonists, ambiguous goals and outcomes. Kirchner's social history writing is vivid-- one understands the rising hopes and the devastating disappointments of the era that saw the Civil Rights Act passed, the assassination of powerful moral leaders RFK, MLK, the exposure of contemptuous and deceitful leaders in the release of the Pentagon Papers and the Watergate revelations. More lively and passionate are his succinct analyses of films from 1967-1976. There are about 20 he reads closely. He makes a compelling case that this was an era clearly set off from its surround, in which Hollywood's major successful products had characteristic intellectual concerns, visual and narrative innovations, that were tightly linked to the social and political developments of that period. The book delves deeply into the serious problems of the seventies-- race riots, urban decay and crime, economic and foreign policy crises, the Vietnam war and antiwar movement, intergenerational alienation. What I loved was revisiting the ethos, even the cliches, --the personal is political, question authority, --with this guide who revives it. Kirshner covers large number of the great films, many well known and some quieter gems with witty and sensitive style. He clearly immersed himself in the contemporaneous film criticism. its as if he had lived through this complex time. Many chapter headings are taken from song lyrics- Dylan's are favorites. He includes delightful revealing bios of the directors and writers, fun stories about production crises and authorial tussles, always in the service of enlightening us about the driving force of the films.
Despite the passion and admiration Kirshner shows for film-makers of the seventies, he retains a discipline and perspective, like an anthropologist who has almost gone native, but holds still his observer status. At the end of the book he has a list of 100 films he suggests as the seventies films, 20 as cannon, subject to debate. I want to stop the world and watch all the films he discusses, with his book in my hand.

Fantastic Book
By JMG Buyer
Should be required reading for any Film School student or film enthusiast. Great explanation of what New Hollywood era represented in the film industry as well as some of the major players and their ideas regarding their place within. The New Hollywood being a big break from the old studio system was a pivotal part of film history and should be given the deference it deserves. Kirshner's book was so so fantastic, I got my university library to order a copy for their permanent collection. What a great addition to any film history library!
