Life Changing Book

The philosopher Baruch Spinoza once said "to understand is to be free". This book does an phenomenal job at understanding the causes of social anxiety and presenting strategies to counteract these causes. The book states that social anxiety(shyness too) is a natural instinct based on nature and nurture, and everyone suffers from it to a certain degree(or susceptible to it). and we can overcome it by understanding it and using cognitive behavioral techniques to ultimately cancel out our socially awkward behavior.

part 1 of the book is called "understanding social anxiety", in it defines social anxiety and how it works in terms of our assumptions and beliefs.

part 2 of the book lays out several proven cognitive strategies. these strategies really do work, to me it was like dumping a base into an acid.

part 3 is sort of a "bonus" chapter to help you be more assertive, on bullying , and relaxation.

This is the best book i have EVER read on the subject. The author truly understands where social anxiety comes from and knows how painful it can be. And the best part, the author knows what to do about it. and it really DOES work.

Social Anxiety can be a VERY painful experience, we can miss out on friendships and intimate relationships, become lonely, feel unwanted and different, feel like there is something really wrong with us etc. (you are not alone)

this book can help you change all of that, and help you live your life to the fullest. You CAN live a socially rich life. You CAN live a rich romantic life. You CAN live a life that fully and harmoniously expresses who you are to the world.

i wish you the best in your journey on overcoming your barriers to harmonious human relations.

As has already been alluded to in previous reviews, the author gets it. She understands the problem completely and how we keep it going. She provides a simple yet effective strategy for change: 1)change how you think using a thought record 2)do things differently and most important think about what actually happened and how it differs from your catastrophic expectations 3)stop being self-conscious and learn to focus externally instead of on yourself 4)test and learn to change your limiting beliefs by collecting new information that disputes those beliefs. It's that simple and as effective.

This book is exactly what I needed!!! Only regret: that I didn't find it sooner

This book was exactly what I needed. It feels like I have been under this dark cloud forever and now the cloud is slowly starting to dissipate and I'm starting to feel the warmth of the sun. It makes me want to cry and laugh at the same time knowing that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. In fact I have not been able to stop smiling for the last 2 days. I don't know if I am socially phobic, but darn near! Never been diagnosed or anything, but all my life I have struggled with extreme shyness. It is so painful. But as I read through the book it gives me so many NEW ideas. And as someone who thinks a lot, I've thought this dilemma over and over and read about it, this book is so enlightening! Articles and things I've read in the past say, "don't focus on yourself so much, but focus on the other person," or "Just be positive." Others have made comments, "Just lighten up, you take everything too seriously," "Just toughen up," "Just this...Just that." The articles I read don't explain HOW, and these well-meaning people actually make you feel worse about yourself because they make it seem like "What's the big deal?" Though I've always been somewhat shy, when I was younger, I used to be pretty social. As I got older is when the social anxiety really started to kick in. I've always wondered what's wrong with me? I have tried soooo many different things to make myself "better," feeling that there is something inherently wrong with me. As I am reading this, I am just wishing I could've read this 10 yrs ago, it would have saved me so much pain and doing the wrong things to alleviate the pain, although I know this book is not near that old, still though I feel that all that anxiety is kind of melting away. I'm not even done with the book, but it's already helped me ALOT! What I've realized in reading this is that I actually am a naturally fairly Extroverted person. Though that label "Shy" was always slapped on me, I naturally want to be around people. And so that is a huge realization! The author has so much understanding and the writing is factual and to the point, no more, no less. But written in such a way that helps you understand your problem and gives you the steps to reason with yourself. About everything else I am a very rational person, and know that my thoughts about social situations are irrational, but somehow, I just couldn't change them. This book has you do mini-experiments to test your existing beliefs, and helps you get to the root of your reasoning. Absolutely wonderful. I'm fairly certain that my confidence will come back quickly, as it already has started. Buy this book if you are really struggling with social anxiety/shyness, you will be so glad you did.

Buy it, look at it, keep it

In this day of AutoCAD libraries and "canned" construction details from vendors, it is rare that a book of hand drafted construction details exists. If the reader can get past the nostalgia of the draftsmanship, and understand the communication that is taking place - black and white photos matched with actual construction documentation - then one should begin to understand the educational component. The idea is being able to have what an AutoCAD library doesnt, a matched pair of construction details with a photo of the constructed landscape element. Some early career professionals and, particularly, students may benefit from having a three dimentional representation of landscape elements. It helps to be able to see the finished product and a detail of the guts - you simply have better comprehension of what goes into construction and how the components come together.

As for criticism of this piece, understand that most of the landscape features look dated - railroad tie retaining walls out of the 70's, glass block fountains from the 80's, heavy timber playgrounds that no municipality would ever build due to liability - theyre all in here! But do not let this deter you, one should still consider this for his or her professional library, because, after all, material requirements, connections and structural considerations dont chage with aesthetic style - the landscape still has to function and standards still have to be met.

If you are preparing for your residency exams or you are already in your clinical practice as gynecology and obstetrics resident, you have to buy this book! It's very complete, although it's not a big textbook like Williams, you can find the information quickly and this is perfect for the specific residency exams. I recommend u buy it. The best was I got this book for $50.00 less than in my country. The delivery was fast and the condition of the book was excellent.

One of the great, unclassifiable writers of the century

Walter Benjamin is easily one of the great German prose writers of our century, despite being almost impossible to classify. His subject matter is frequently literary, but he always transcends his subject matter to touch upon issues in philosophy, art, history, Marxism, and Western culture, illuminating (no pun intended) all he discusses. His essays on Proust and Kafka are priceless, and his essays on "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction" and the theses on the philsophy of history, are classic.
But the best reason to read Benjamin is his prose. There are images in his essays on Proust and Kafka that are as superb as anything in Proust and Kafka. That is saying a lot, but it is true. As a philosopher, I value his example which proves that one can write meaningfully on philosophical topics, and yet write well. This collection of his essays, ILLUMINATIONS, is preferable to the second collection to appear in English, REFLECTIONS, though that one is also worth the time and effort.

Wonderful, every sentence an insight

Benjamin is one of the few 20th century philosophers who can convey profound thoughts in language that isn't at all opaque. His sentences are always perfectly clear - no pretentious literary or Marxist jargon (thank God). The only thing that makes it slow reading is that you always want to stop, put the book down, and think about what he's just said.
For example, a passage from his essay on Kafka:
'The definition of it which Kafka has given applies to the sons more than to anyone else: "Original sin, the old injustice committed by man, consists in the complaint that he has been the victim of an injustice, the victim of original sin." But who is accused of this inherited sin - the sin of having produced an heir - if not the father by the son? Accordingly the son would be the sinner. But one must not conclude from Kafka's definition that the accusation is sinful because it is false. Nowhere does Kafka say that it is made wrongfully. A never-ending process is at work here, and no cause can appear in a worse light than the one for which the father enlists the aid of these officials and court offices . . . '
This is not opacity for the sake of being opaque; he is trying to get at something incredibly complex, something that (unlike most literary criticism) actually helps you appreciate Kafka and understand him a little better. Benjamin doesn't peel away layers of an onion to arrive at a single shining insight; he presents a simple idea, expands on it a little, and lets you put on the layers of complexity yourself. Read these essays carefully, and it will be obvious why entire schools of thought have sprung up around single paragraphs, why people have devoted their lives to figuring out the ramifications of a single sentence . . .
Benjamin accomplishes something rare: in writing about art, he succeeds in telling us something about life in modern times. And his insights never seem forced; they flow naturally from what he is discussing. For example, his essay on Leskov, "This process of assimilation, which takes place in depth, requires a state of relaxation that is becoming rarer and rarer. If sleep is the apogee of physical relaxation, boredom is the apogee of mental relaxation. Boredom is the dream bird that hatches the egg of experience. A rustling in the leaves drives him away. His nesting places - the activies that are intimately associated with boredom - are already extinct in the cities and are declining in the country as well. With this the gift for listening is lost and the comminity of listeners disappears. For storytelling is always the art of repeated stories, and this art is lost when the stories are no longer retained."
A simple little paragraph on storytelling, but soon you start thinking about how the art of writing has changed since Benjamin's time, and what effect television and the movies have had on the way we live, on "boredom" and mental relaxation . . . anyway, I'm probably starting to get pretentious which Benjamin, thankfully, never does.
Above all this entire collection is filled with something increasingly rare nowadays, a genuine love of books. Forget all the Marxist stuff in other reviews, all Benjamin is really doing, finally, is talking about some books that he likes. That he succeeds in doing much more is a testament to his brilliance.

Just a quick note

I have nothing to add to the reviews below except to note for scholarly interest that the essay 'The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction' included in this collection is not Benjamin's final version. (Neither is this title a good translation of the German: 'Das Kunstwerk im Zeitalter seiner technischen Reproduzierbarkeit'. Zohn's translation in the selected writings is better: 'The Work of Art in the Age of its Technological Reproducibility'.) The text in this collection is the 1935 manuscript, as originally published in 1936; the text collected in the Selected Writings, Vol. 4 is the final 1939 version that, as far as I can tell, was not published in Benjamin's lifetime. The difference between the two texts is slight, consisting mainly of some additional sentences here and there and some changed words. At least one of these revisions is, I hypothesize, the result of Adorno's criticisms of his letter to Benjamin of 18 Mar 1936.

Otherwise, for most purposes, this is the best collection of Benjamin's essays available for an introduction to his thought. This volume collects some of the best of his essays that are otherwise spread throughout the selected writings published by the Harvard U.P.
