Who would think that an unfinished autobiography could be so good? But despite its rough edges and the odd passage of interest only to the author, the Life of Henry Brulard is very good indeed, and as moving as The Red and the Black. Early in the Life, Stendhal describes the pleasure of reading Florentine goldsmith Benvenuto Cellini's memoirs, so fresh, he notes, that they seem to have been written yesterday. The same could be said for Stendhal's own autobiography.

I didn't look forward to trying this book---memoirs of childhood seldom do much for me---but there being so little Stendhal out there in translation, I couldn't overlook it. Well, long book tho it is, H.B. is very readable and a lot of fun for those who love Stendhal's style and persona. Chatty, honest, quirky (all those little maps!), skipping around madly, with the strange mix of irony and idealism that makes Stendhal so "modern," this is an enjoyable book for "the happy few." I doubt there are many books like it---Rousseau's confessions feel much more polished, & hence less "real," than Stendhal's book does. (Of course I'm agnostic on how honest S. really is---but it's a good book, true or not!)

excellent book, bad edition

The edition of this book is very bad with plenty of spelling errors which at times make sentences difficult to understand. example: "eveque" (bishop) nine times out of ten is printed as "evoque" (to evoke), "maintenant" (now)becomes "main tenant" (hand holding (?))the first name "Boniface" at one stage becomes "Bon il face" (good he face (?)) and so on and so forth.

Very sloppy work from Amazon for one of the most important French novel of the XIX century.

Very Helpful for CTEL

I promised myself I would post a review after receiving my CTEL exam scores. After being out of teaching for almost 20 years, I passed all three sections! Not easy. I studied and stressed quite a bit, but this book was a huge part of my results. For Module 1 study chapters 1-3, for Module 2 chapters 4-7 (Part 1 chapters 4-5, Part 2 chapters 6-7), for Module 3 chapters 8-10. Flash cards from Quizlet and videos from various places were also helpful. Taking all three tests on the same day would have been a bad idea. If you can, space them out over three days.The book is expensive, but I didn't need to purchase anything else. Unless you are already familiar with all of the terminology and best practices, don't wait to get started studying. Good luck!

The book is actually quite good and very informative. My complaint is that, evidently, if one purchases this book from Amazon, one is not able to access the online videos that the book recommends as support at myeducationlab.com. The publisher, Pearson, is terribly unhelpful.

Yertle's story leads off with his attempt to build a bigger kingdom on the backs of his loyal subjects (literally). King of everything he can see, Yertle orders his turtles to stack up under him to build a towering throne. ("He made each turtle stand on another one's back and he piled them all up in a nine-turtle stack.") But a plain little turtle named Mack--stuck at the bottom--decides he's had enough. ("I know up on top you are seeing great sights, but down on the bottom we, too, should have rights!")

Following Yertle's downfall, a whiny girl-bird named Gertrude McFuzz wishes she had two feathers, just like Miss Lolla-Lee-Lou: "One droopy-droop feather. That's all that she had. And, oh! That one feather made Gertrude so sad." But even when Gertrude gets her wish--and then some--she finds that vanity has its price. Meanwhile, in "The Big Brag," a proud rabbit and an even-prouder bear duke it out in a battle of the senses, arguing over who's the best of the beasts, only to get their clever comeuppance from a wild-eyed little worm. This is one of my very favorite Dr. Seuss books. I had kids late in life, and it was a trip to randomly purchase this book at around age 50 and to recognize the stories and the pictures not from 10 or 20 years ago but from 1970 or earlier! Seems like I read somewhere that every cell in your body gets replaced at least every 7 years... I guess the oldtimers passed the message along to the new guys. Whereas I never liked the Cat in the Hat, this is a good book with good (and humorous) messages and fantastic illustrations that I genuinely enjoy reading to my kids.

By my bedside right now are Tolstoy & Seuss....when I tire deeply of Anna & her insatiable desire to self-destruct, Gertrude McFuzz comes into play....she is slightly less macabre (& she has a future)...
of course, a hybridised melding of the two characters would be totally frickin cool...
but, somehow Gertrude Karenina just doesn't have it.
Oh well, whatever the case...Seuss should be at everyone's bedside...and should be read aloud by one's lover, with beeswax candles lit....rose petals strewn about the floor....a Hennessey's in-hand...a silk kimono rumpled....it should be read slowly...with drama..and definitely in a British accent...try it....

In a recent pretest, it was apparent only one of fifty students was familiar with this classic. Ted Geisel not only wished to teach our children how to read, but make them think about the world around them.

This book is very dated; it doesn't appear that the author or editor has looked at it, or revised it, since the mid-80s. As such, it fails to place the Mini-14 in the context of various recent crime bills and their effects on folding stocks, etc. Furthermore, there is too much in here about various Beretta designs, and a .22 cal. plinker. Much of the information is generic to all rifles, such as tips on scabbards and bipods, while there is relatively little timely information specific to the Mini-14, such as how to tweak better performance from the weapon. The author also digresses a bit too far afield on the Sturm Ruger corp. in general, and Ruger non-firearm information in particular.
Some current information on hand-loading for the Mini-14 would be a nice addition as well.
It appears this book was an early draft that was never finished for market, although it clearly shows evidence that the author is well-acquainted with his subject.

A good book for a beginner working with Mini-14s.

I recently purchase a Mini-14 and I was looking for some resource materials. I purchased both this book and "Super Systems". This is by far the better choice of the two. While field stripping explaination is ok, I would have liked some pictures of this proceedure. If you are already an experienced Mini-14 user then save your money.

Pretty good book that needs updating

Much of the information in this little volume is worthwhile. Especially valuable are the field-stripping, trouble shooting and basic expedient gunsmithing advice. There is no guide to improving accuracy, however, which I was hoping to find, and not much on recommended ammunition or on actual experiences with owning and shooting this nifty carbine. The complete history of the development and usage of the "everyman's rifle" is interesting, but over long. Also, there is too much information in which I am not interested - M14's, M1A1's, and even AK's take up far too much space. Enough to make me think Mr. Long was deliberately trying to fill up a few pages. The book NEEDS a good updating - it was written before the crime bill, and much is made of various folding stocks and other "obsolete" accessories, and the reference section is mostly outdated. Overall I'm glad to have it on my reference shelf, where it will sit until I need to solve some problem or other, but otherwise it's not a satisfactory read.
