great figures

Wow this is dense. I am using this book to study during my allergy and immunology fellowship. It is exceedingly dense for my purposes, and the authors sometimes go off on what I consider to be unnecessary tangents. However, the figures are excellent and its saving grace. Overall, I am pleased with this book. It is a nice reference.

This IS the book for understanding Immunology, there's no better book for that task, the layout is just plain incredible and very easy to read, even for those whose main lenguage is not english. Every student should give it a read. It is that good.

I am less enthusiastic.

I'm less enthusiastic than the other reviewers.

I mean, I really have to laugh on some level. The difficult people I deal with would brush this kind of stuff aside with an effortless swish of the finger. The book curates a number of really very basic ideas that we'd all be familiar with in any case (e.g., using "I" phrases), and then gives a short story/skit in which the technique is demonstrated. And it's just comical. The characters in these skits are not very tenacious, they are impossibly logical and empathetic, they instantly capitulate, they speak in strange, inorganic, stilted ways, and then they have a group hug moment when it's all over. These kinds of epiphanies occur, in the real world, only after Godot does.

Anyone who has dealt with truly caustic personalities in the workplace knows that this is a pipe dream.

For example, the protagonist (who has been viciously slandered, or outmaneuvered, or ignored, or impugned) says: "Can't you see how what you did there affects me, and even though I now understand that you did mean it in that way, that it still will upset me?" And in Ms. Evenson's universe, the respondant now says: "Yes, indeed, I can see how that would have upset you, and now that my eyes are opened, I will be ever so careful in the future to proactively leverage your feelings. I now see that we are equally important partners in this enterprise, and that I have been hateful. Let us now hug, and seal the bond between us, wherein we now understand each other's equally valid life choices!!!"

Anyone that works in a place where important things are done (and hence, has aggressive personalities) knows that this is not reality.

I am disappointed in the book. There was nothing here, really, that I could benefit from. It is hard for me to imagine the kind of flaccid, vapid, workplace in which this kind of schlock could be relevant guidance. It is, to me, a fictionalized account of what could be effective in a completely different universe from the one in which we live.

I am sure Ms. Evenson is a wonderful person, but she couldn't last ten seconds in any workplace I have been in.

What Can You Say to That Impossible Person?

Sometimes book titles match the content. This primer on "powerful phrases for dealing with difficult people" falls into that category. Crammed with savvy phrases, lucid commentaries, and sharp questions, this book has helped me deal with a few "difficult people". Thank you, Renee Evenson, for writing this sensible how-to book. Quality human relationships matter.

Good start - Poor finish

The first five or six chapters are interesting but after this the book gets very repetitive. I was hoping for some real insights and experiences about the times Gates spent as Secretary but most of the writing was limited to broad generalisations about people and events. I gave up on the book before the end.

This book is a good read. It is really a bunch of vignettes of Robert Gates experiences and little teaching lessons associated. After a while it does get a bit repetitive, but all in all quite a good read. Recommend if you work with people and aim to be a leader.

This is absolutely the best book ever about the inner workings of the recording process!!!

Sylvia Massy's Book "RECORDING UNHINGED" arrived today! If you want to know how to build a telephone mic, record a chicken or just read great recording anecdotes from virtually every engineer/producer out there go to your favorite literary establishment and BUY THIS BOOK NOW! It is beyond fantastic. Sylvia now has added "Published Author" to her long list of accomplishments, her artwork and cartoons are FAB! By golly, my pup, Miss Wiggles (Wiggie Hartman-Stasium) even has her picture in it!! This is absolutely the best book I have ever seen about the inner workings of the recording process, it's informal, informative and hilarious!! YEP!!! Congratulations Sylvia!!!!!!

A book for every studio lounge.

I received my copy of "Recording Unhinged" today. It proves that the synergy between artists can flow though any conduit and need not be direct. All the bits and pieces presented are the perfect smorgasbord of useful knowledge, tips and tricks, and cool stories so artfully laid out in the way the creative mind can best feed upon. Two thumbs and both big toes up!

Recording Unhinged is an apt title.

Very cool book. It has some unorthodox methods in it. Definitely not written like your standard how to book. But still A very interesting read. Also lots of great anecdotes from producers. eg. Ross Robinson hanging on Jonathan Davis' back while he tracked vocals; Bob Ezrin duct taping Peter Gabriel to a pillar in the studio because he wasnt performing to Bob's standards.
