The Animated Bestiary: Animals, Cartoons, and Culture, by Paul Wells

Cartoonists and animators have given animals human characteristics for so long that audiences are now accustomed to seeing Bugs Bunny singing opera and Mickey Mouse walking his dog Pluto.

The Animated Bestiary critically evaluates the depiction of animals in cartoons and animation more generally. Paul Wells argues that artists use animals to engage with issues that would be more difficult to address directly because of political, religious, or social taboos. Consequently, and principally through anthropomorphism, animation uses animals to play out a performance of gender, sex and sexuality, racial and national traits, and shifting identity, often challenging how we think about ourselves.

Wells draws on a wide range of examples, from the original King Kongto Nick Park's Chicken Run to Disney cartoonsùsuch as Tarzan, The Jungle Book, and Brother Bearùto reflect on people by looking at the ways in which they respond to animals in cartoons and films.

The Clean Coder: A Code of Conduct for Professional Programmers (Robert C. Martin Series), by Robert C. Martin

Programmers who endure and succeed amidst swirling uncertainty and nonstop pressure share a common attribute: They care deeply about the practice of creating software. They treat it as a craft. They are professionals.

In The Clean Coder: A Code of Conduct for Professional Programmers, legendary software expert Robert C. Martin introduces the disciplines, techniques, tools, and practices of true software craftsmanship. This book is packed with practical advice–about everything from estimating and coding to refactoring and testing. It covers much more than technique: It is about attitude. Martin shows how to approach software development with honor, self-respect, and pride; work well and work clean; communicate and estimate faithfully; face difficult decisions with clarity and honesty; and understand that deep knowledge comes with a responsibility to act.

Readers will learn

  • What it means to behave as a true software craftsman
  • How to deal with conflict, tight schedules, and unreasonable managers
  • How to get into the flow of coding, and get past writer’s block
  • How to handle unrelenting pressure and avoid burnout
  • How to combine enduring attitudes with new development paradigms
  • How to manage your time, and avoid blind alleys, marshes, bogs, and swamps
  • How to foster environments where programmers and teams can thrive
  • When to say “No”–and how to say it
  • When to say “Yes”–and what yes really means

Great software is something to marvel at: powerful, elegant, functional, a pleasure to work with as both a developer and as a user. Great software isn’t written by machines. It is written by professionals with an unshakable commitment to craftsmanship. The Clean Coder will help you become one of them–and earn the pride and fulfillment that they alone possess.

Review
“‘Uncle Bob’ Martin definitely raises the bar with his latest book. He explains his expectation for a professional programmer on management interactions, time management, pressure, on collaboration, and on the choice of tools to use. Beyond TDD and ATDD, Martin explains what every programmer who considers him- or herself a professional not only needs to know, but also needs to follow in order to make the young profession of software development grow.”

“Some technical books inspire and teach; some delight and amuse. Rarely does a technical book do all four of these things. Robert Martin’s always have for me and The Clean Coder is no exception. Read, learn, and live the lessons in this book and you can accurately call yourself a software professional.”

–George Bullock

Senior Program Manager

“If a computer science degree had ‘required reading for after you graduate,’ this would be it. In the real world, your bad code doesn’t vanish when the semester’s over, you don’t get an A for marathon coding the night before an assignment’s due, and, worst of all, you have to deal with people. So, coding gurus are not necessarily professionals. The Clean Coder describes the journey to professionalism . . . and it does a remarkably entertaining job of it.”

–Jeff Overbey

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

“The Clean Coder is much more than a set of rules or guidelines. It contains hard-earned wisdom and knowledge that is normally obtained through many years of trial and error or by working as an apprentice to a master craftsman. If you call yourself a software professional, you need this book.”

From the Back Cover
Even bad code can function. But if code isn't clean, it can bring a development organization to its knees. Every year, countless hours and significant resources are lost because of poorly written code. But it doesn't have to be that way.
Noted software expert Robert C. Martin presents a revolutionary paradigm with "Clean Code: A Handbook of Agile Software Craftsmanship." Martin has teamed up with his colleagues from Object Mentor to distill their best agile practice of cleaning code "on the fly" into a book that will instill within you the values of a software craftsman and make you a better programmer-but only if you work at it.
What kind of work will you be doing? You'll be reading code-lots of code. And you will be challenged to think about what's right about that code, and what's wrong with it. More importantly, you will be challenged to reassess your professional values and your commitment to your craft.
"Clean Code" is divided into three parts. The first describes the principles, patterns, and practices of writing clean code. The second part consists of several case studies of increasing complexity. Each case study is an exercise in cleaning up code-of transforming a code base that has some problems into one that is sound and efficient. The third part is the payoff: a single chapter containing a list of heuristics and "smells" gathered while creating the case studies. The result is a knowledge base that describes the way we think when we write, read, and clean code.
Readers will come away from this book understanding
How to tell the difference between good and bad codeHow to write good code and how to transform bad code into good codeHow to create good names, good functions, good objects, and good classesHow to format code for maximum readabilityHow to implement complete error handling without obscuring code logicHow to unit test and practice test-driven developmentThis book is a must for any developer, software engineer, project manager, team lead, or systems analyst with an interest in producing better code.

Like a long talk with a software mentor
By Michelle J. Kenoyer
This book is good at providing a general overview of what it means to be a software professional. Lots of good advice and provides many resources and a general framework for thinking about the subjects he presents.

Sometimes the author presents strategies very specific to him that wouldn't work for me. For example, I tried the pomodoro method before and had mixed results. I think readers would benefit more looking at the goal (better time management) and finding a methodology that works for them to accomplish that goal.

He is very bullish on unit tests, stating that there is no longer and controversy over TDD. As a huge fan of unit tests, I find many places I have worked at have very little interest in unit testing or don't see any real benefit.

The book is also very strongly against being in the Flow to program which I found interesting. This is pretty much 100% the opposite of everything else I have ever heard/read.

He is also against listening to music while programming. He provides a weird example where while listening to Pink Floyd his code comments had Pink Floyd references. The author has a tendency to confuse something that is true for him ("I don't listen to music while programming") to a general universal rule ("Programmers shouldn't listen to music while programming").

Most programmers I know who listen to music do so as white noise. For instance, I listen to techno many times while programming. I don't like techno but the droning drum servies to drown out the office chitter chatter at my current gig.

Like Clean Code, I don't always agree with the author but provides good food for thought and is worth the read!

Disappointing.
By Andrew Coats
Overall, I would say this book was disappointing. Admittedly, I had high expectation after reading "Clean Code". Perhaps it was the rather too personal anecdotes that initially turned me off. I would say you are better of reading "Pragmatic Programmer" and a book on Scrum XP and software project estimation.
As other reviews have said, it feels like a collection of blog articles published in a book.

Chapter 1. Professionalism
The book got off to a bad start for me... the first chapter on professionalism:
"Do the math. In a week there are 168 hours. Give your employer 40, and your career another 20. That leaves 108. Another 56 for sleep leaves 52 for everything else.

Perhaps you don't want to make that kind of commitment, That's fine, but should not think of yourself as a professional. Professionals spend time caring for their profession."

Really? 20 hours per week; so if you spend 10 per week reading blogs, listening to podcasts, doing kata's etc... you are no longer a professional? While I agree, you have to take personal responsibility for your career, asserting that you have to spend 20 hours a week seems over the top to me. Perhaps the author wishes to be controversial and overly opinionated to provoke debate?

Chapter 4. Coding.
The section on listening to music while coding has a truly bizarre anecdote:
"One day I went back into a module that I been editing while listening to the opening sequence of The Wall. The comments in that code contained lyrics from the piece, and editorial notations about dive bombers and crying babies."

I'm guessing lots of people listen to music while coding without a problem. I can imagine, if I had been working 80 hour weeks for the last month, I would something similar, but surely that is a symptom of being on a death march?

I liked the section on false delivery. It can sometimes be difficult for everyone to have a shared understanding of 'done'. A former Scrum Master used to have a short meeting whenever a new team member joined us to cover the "definition of done".

6. Practicing
I'm a little skeptical of repeatedly doing the same kata; yes create side projects to spike a new technology that you wish to learn about - but I'm not convinced that continued repetition of kata helps.

9. Time Management
I was glad to read, that it is OK to decline a meeting. It validates my practice of declining meetings without an agenda/ goal/ deliverable.

I liked the advice, on how to leave a meeting that you are not adding value to and from which you are receiving no value.

Focus-Manna
I thought this section contradicted what the author mentioned about 'The Flow Zone' in chapter 4.

"We write code when our focus-manna is high; and we do no other, less productive things when it's not.".

On the Zone - "It is the highly focused, tunnel-vision state of consciousness that programmers can get into while they write code.".

10. Estimation.
The following excerpt I found very peculiar - "I've only been drunk two times in my life, and only really drunk once. It was at the Teradyne Christmas party in 1978. I was 26 years old.".

14. Mentoring, apprenticeships and Craftsmanship.
I felt this chapter could have been longer, with more depth and more concrete proposals; this chapter should of been the highlight of the book - as the most of the themes of the book are either covered in depth elsewhere or are part of best practices/ agile bandwagon (TDD, unit tests, acceptance tests). It would have been nice to provide more information about efforts the IEEE or the ACM are doing to promote the idea of software professionals. A discussion on certifications may have been useful.

It felt like the book ended rather abruptly with on Tools. It seems this chapter is going to make the book dated very quickly; whereas a book on titled "The Clean Coder: A Code of Conduct for professional programmers" should be timeless.

There is no try!
By Robert H. Stine Jr.
In "The Clean Coder: A Code of Conduct for Professional Programmers," Uncle Bob Martin is his usual, controversial self, but he is often convincing. One upshot is that I will never again tell a manager that "I'll try" to hit an overly ambitious deadline: I will either commit or refuse to commit, or offer an estimate of the odds of success. On the topic of deadlines, Martin observes that project managers and "suits" regard completion dates as commitments, while programmers tend to regard them as estimates, usually overly optimistic estimates. He makes the case that it is the professional duty of programmers to come up with realistic estimates and then stick to their guns.

Another good point Martin makes is that a professional programmer should take the responsibility to hone his or her skills outside working hours. He recommends working a focused and productive 40 hours a week, and then spending 20 hours a week on career development: reading, learning other languages, even practicing programming "katas".

One of the most controversial claims Martin makes is that getting into "the zone" - that mental state of total concentration for which programmers strive - is a bad idea, because it results in too narrow a focus. Personally, I'm not convinced. I think that the problems of focused programming can be remedied by being sure to take a big-picture view from time to time, and also by code reviews.

A problem with this book is Martin's use of overstatement to indicate emphasis. So when he says "never, never, never" agree to meet a deadline by working extra hard and long, he means "hardly ever". His insistence that agreeing to accelerate effort inevitably result in low quality code just does not wash. Not that it can go on forever, but my own experience is that a brief and intense push can often get things done faster without sacrificing quality. Even Martin's suggested regimen suggests that there is slack in the schedule: surely the 20 per week of career development could be sacrificed from time to time. I shudder to think of a mid-level programmer, influenced by Martin's rhetoric, refusing to work extra hours "on principle", thus harming both his own career and the prospects of his company.

With that caveat, however, the book has much sound advice, and is an excellent read to boot.

Kant on Beauty and Biology: An Interpretation of the 'Critique of Judgment' (Modern European Philosophy), by Rachel Zuckert

Kant's Critique of Judgment has often been interpreted by scholars as comprising separate treatments of three uneasily connected topics: beauty, biology, and empirical knowledge. Rachel Zuckert's book interprets the Critique as a unified argument concerning all three domains. She argues that on Kant's view, human beings demonstrate a distinctive cognitive ability in appreciating beauty and understanding organic life: an ability to anticipate a whole that we do not completely understand according to preconceived categories. This ability is necessary, moreover, for human beings to gain knowledge of nature in its empirical character as it is, not as we might assume it to be. Review of the hardback: '... impressive in its intellectual scope, its clearly-written quality, its well-informed, considerable citation of the secondary literature in Kant scholarship and its manner of arguing for a variety of nuanced positions that arise within the text's many subthemes. It is a contribution that stands solidly on the shoulders of the presently leading Kant scholarship and that integrates itself well into it.' British Journal for the History of Philosophy

To tell you the truth, I really never realized that there were so many ways to "tie a tie". Going to show this one to my husband and my sons, I think they will be as surprised as I was. My favorite is the Eldredge, going to have them try this one first and then have them work their way through the book. All I can say is that my guys are going to look handsome the next time they "suit up"!

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Barely suppressed despair and black wit infuse this beautifully observed debut from Ethiopian émigré Mengestu. Set over eight months in a gentrifying Washington, D.C., neighborhood in the 1970s, it captures an uptick in Ethiopian grocery store owner Sepha Stephanos's long-deferred hopes, as Judith, a white academic, fixes up the four-story house next to his apartment building, treats him to dinner and lets him steal a kiss. Just as unexpected is Sepha's friendship with Judith's biracial 11-year-old daughter, Naomi (one of the book's most vivid characters), over a copy of The Brothers Karamazov. Mengestu adds chiaroscuro with the story of Stephanos's 17-year exile from his family and country following his father's murder by revolutionary soldiers. After long days in the dusty, barely profitable shop, Sepha's two friends, Joseph from Congo and Kenneth from Kenya, joke with Sepha about African dictators and gently mock his romantic aspirations, while the neighborhood's loaded racial politics hang over Sepha and Judith's burgeoning relationship like a sword of Damocles. The novel's dirge-like tone may put off readers looking for the next Kite Runner, but Mengestu's assured prose and haunting set pieces (especially a series of letters from Stephanos's uncle to Jimmy Carter, pleading that he respect "the deep friendship between our two countries") are heart-rending and indelible. From Booklist
In his run-down store in a gentrifying neighborhood of Washington, D.C., Ethiopian immigrant Stepha Stephanos regularly meets with fellow African immigrants Ken the Kenyan and Joe from the Congo. Their favorite game is matching African nations to coups and dictators, as they consider how their new immigrant expectations measure up to the reality of life in America after 17 years. From his store and nearby apartment, Stephanos makes keen observations of American race and class tensions, seeing similarities--physical and social--to his hometown of Addis Ababa, where his father was killed in the throes of revolution. When Judith, a white woman, and Naomi, her mixed-race daughter, move into the neighborhood, Stephanos finds tentative prospects for friendship beyond his African compatriots. Mengestu, himself an Ethiopian immigrant, engages the reader in a deftly drawn portrait of dreams in the face of harsh realities from the perspective of immigrants. Vanessa Bush

Review
Ethiopian escapes genocide, makes new life in Washington

For anyone who's caught the gaze of a foreign-born waiter or cabdriver and wished for a deeper understanding of his half-glimpsed life, reading fiction is one way to crack open the dusty window that often separates us. It's all the more intriguing when the writer is as observant as 29-year-old Dinaw Mengestu, who immigrated to America in 1980, after his family fled Ethiopia's genocidal Red Terror. His haunting and powerful first novel, "The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears," is one of the first to give voice to that experience.

His story centers on 36-year-old Sepha Stephanos, who left his mother and brother in Ethiopia 17 years earlier, after his father was brutalized and escorted to his death by soldiers backing Mengistu Haile Mariam, the Communist dictator who overthrew the senile Haile Selassie.

For the past decade, Stephanos has been quietly reading Dostoyevsky, Dante and Naipaul behind the counter of his convenience store in a run-down Washington, D.C., neighborhood. His evenings are punctuated by visits from Kenneth from Kenya and Joe from Congo that glitter with dark wit. The three, who met years before, when they were valets at a local hotel, now drink shots beneath a 20-year-old map of Africa and play a game that begins when one of them names a dictator; the challenge to the others is to guess the year and country of each coup.

Into this world of suppressed dreams and frustrated memories walks Naomi, an angular 11-year-old know-it-all who, like Stephanos, misses her African father. She starts visiting Stephanos regularly and reads the newspaper with him, stealing his heart as she gravely shakes her head over the failure of American policy in the Middle East and the lack of resources devoted to the global AIDS crisis.

The spark between this spirited girl and cautious man shines through in their dialogue, which is among the sharpest in the book. It also draws Stephanos closer to Naomi's mother, Judith, a single, white professor who stands out because she's renovating one of the grand old houses in this predominantly black neighborhood, and also because her daughter's skin is "lighter than black but darker than white." Soon, Judith and Stephanos begin a hesitant romance, pushing him to consider for the first time what it might feel like to be part of a family again. (The book's title comes from "The Inferno," when Dante emerges from hell and once again lays his eyes on the stars.)

But the same wave of gentrification that brought Judith and Naomi into Stephanos' neighborhood ushers in economic and social pressures threatening his livelihood. Judith's shining four-story mansion also becomes a powerful symbol of the tipping social scale, as longtime black residents are evicted from the area.

We know from the outset that Stephanos' relationship with Judith is doomed, and his resulting downward spiral doesn't always propel the reader along at a fast clip. But what keep the pages turning are Mengestu's tangy and perceptive characterizations and well-crafted set pieces that are alive with personal experience.

Mengestu wrings bravado and pathos out of an episode where Kenneth puts on a suit and rents a car, to make the right impression when he and Stephanos try to buy a used car. After pulling into the dealership "cautiously, as if every minor gesture of ours were being judged," Kenneth decides against going into the main office, instead donning sunglasses and waiting for a salesman to come to him, as he and Stephanos lean coolly against the hood of his car. But the two African immigrants never get more than a "one-eyed glance" from the salesmen and leave 20 minutes later, empty-handed.

Among the most arresting scenes are those involving Stephanos' uncle Berhane Selassie, who is 20 years older than he and once lived on a well-appointed ranch outside Addis Ababa. At least among those in his close-knit apartment building, Selassie has retained the aura of respect that his name commanded in the old regime. Though now working as a cabdriver during the day and parking attendant at night, Selassie sometimes reveals "remnants of the humorous, snobbish young man he had once been." For example, when he comes home grinning inexplicably after his long day's work and Stephanos asks him why, Selassie responds enthusiastically, "Gas is so cheap!," though clearly that's the last reason he came to this country.

When Stephanos gets his own eviction notice and his confidence in his business falters, he returns to the apartment he used to share with his uncle and opens a lockbox in Selassie's closet. Inside are the letters his uncle wrote to U.S. Presidents Carter and Reagan during the Red Terror.

The first letter to Carter -- before his uncle shed his innocence and began writing in the spare, detailed style he found in the Washington Post -- still tugs at Stephanos: "Dear President Carter ... I am one of those people for whom nothing is left of their home country. Everything I have has been taken away from me. For many ages, the United States and Ethiopia have been close allies. There is a deep friendship between our two countries. Therefore, it is imperative that the United States, along with Ethiopia's friends in Europe, come to her aid at this critical juncture in her history." That "friendship" between the United States and Ethiopia, which was solidified when Ethiopia became a founding member of the League of Nations and later the United Nations, has long since been betrayed by the Cold War and oil politics abroad. Yet, as Mengestu closely observes the human face of that betrayal, as it plays out amid the racism and class politics of Washington, D.C., he gives us another chance to understand the Ethiopian American experience, in a deeply felt novel that deserves to be read. -- San Francisco Chronicle, March 11, 2007

Mengestu has told a rich and lyrical story of displacement and loneliness. I was profoundly moved by this tale of Ethiopian immigrant's search for acceptance, peace, and identity. -- Khaled Hosseini, author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns

These characters are artfully crafted, original and complex in their humanity. Mengestu wants us to know them, to hear their story, and he succeeds in giving us a novel that is fresh and new. -- Miami Herald

This a great African novel, a great Washington novel, and a great American novel. -- The New York Times Book Review

This first novel, by an Ethiopian-American, sings of the immigrant experience, an old American story that people renew every generation, but it sings in an existential key...His straightforward language and his low-key voice combine to make a compelling narrative, one that loops back in time yet seems to move forward with an even pace. -- Alan Cheuse, Dallas Morning News

This is not a story for only an immigrant audience. The author, Dinaw Mengestu, writes in a way that makes this a universal story. In doing so, he does what the best writers accomplish. -- The Oregonian

[A] tender, enthralling debut novel about the hidden lives of immigrants who are caught between the brutal Africa they have fled and an America that will not full admit them...Mengestu brilliantly illuminates both the trauma of exile and the ways in which so many of us are still looking for home in America. -- Richard McCann, O, The Oprah Magazine

[E]loquent...The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears is not a conventional immigrant novel, and Stephanos is not a garden-variety emigre...deeply moving. -- Chicago Tribune

[W]onderfully written and moving. -- Esquire

[W]renching and important...Seldom has a character emerged in a recent novel who is so compellingly dark but honest, hopeful but dismal, and able to turn his chronicle into a truly American tapestry...Mengestu has made, and made well, a novel that is a retelling of the immigrant experience. -- Chris Abani, Los Angeles Times

Beautiful First Novel About an Ethiopian Immigrant
By Joseph Landes
I picked Dinaw Mengestu's first book after being recommended it by my brother who went to the same MFA in Writing program as him at Columbia. I had heard about his newer book How to Read the Air but had not yet read it. I very much enjoyed The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears. It is a beautifully written book that keeps your attention throughout, moves quickly, and is completely enjoyable and a sensitive piece of work. The story is about a younger man named Sepha Stepanos who fled the Ethiopian Revolution many years ago and came to Washington D.C. Like many new immigrants he isn't quite sure what job to do so after living with his uncle for a while and working in a hotel, he opens up a convenience store in a newer and what was supposed to be a soon to be flourishing neighborhood. He meets up with two other African friends from other parts of the continent and they share stories and experiences as they too go through their own trials and tribulations trying to make it in America. Soon, a new family moves into the neighborhood--a single mom Judith and her daughter Naomi. Sepha becomes close with them and particularly the daughter who hangs out at his store after school. Sepha can't quite determine what sort of relationship he should have with Judith but clearly enjoys being a father figure to Naomi. The neighborhood and his store quickly go downhill and Sepha needs to decide how he will react to both. A very good book that I highly recommend.

Interesting perspective
By Diana M. Frank
If you have any interest in the immigration issue this book will give you a different perspective on it. Not everyone comes to the USA simply for opportunity. Many people come because they can no longer live in countries destroyed by wars fought over control of natural resources. For many this is not the land of opportunity. In the current situation it isn't the land of opportunity for Americans. In reading this book and also Stones from the Creek, I see the opportunity to compare the past and present immigrant/worker experiences with an eye toward finding common ground. We know that this isn't the land where the streets are paved with gold. We know that you can work 2 jobs and still not make ends meet. We know that in spite of the fact that there is a black president, racism still exists. Great book. I'm reading another one of his now.

Worthy Debut Novel About the Immigrant Experience
By William Capodanno
Mengestu's debut novel brings to life the American immigrant experience in a touching way. The novel is about an Ethiopian immigrant, Sepha, and his experiences in the Washington DC area over a seven month period in the 1970s. Mengestu captures the hopes and dreams, as well as the struggles and disappointment, of those coming to this country for a better life than in their native land.

Sepha owns a small neighborhood grocey story around Logan Circle, a community underground gentrification. We see his hopes for a more prosperous and successful business grow as work crews start renovating local buildings. Most notably, Sepha decides to start selling sandwiches and buys fresh deli meats and promotes this to what he hopes will be his new clientele.

The two dimensions of this book I found so rewarding are the interplay and relationships of the various characters with Sepha as well as the ups and downs of Sepha's experience representing the broader ebb and flow of immigrant experience.

Judith, a single white academic restores a four story brick neighborhood in the building and moves in with her wiser-than-her years 11 year old Naomi. The depth of Naomi's character was wonderful -- a somewhat sassy, precocious but sweet girl. We see Naomi take to Sepha and a deep bond created between the two of them -- Sepha becomes a father/older brother figure to her. Especially poignant was the joy and fun they had reading of the Brothers Karamazov together in the store.

At the same time Sepha begins to fall for Judith and we see the impact that race and language has on their relationship. Once again, the hope of a bright future gives way to the dim reality of the struggle most first generation immigrants face.

Mengestu ultimately crafts a very satisfying and enjoyable read. It brings smiles and laughter to the reader as well sadness and disappointment -- working both at the character level but at the broader level of immigrant experience. Mengestu is a young author that you'll want to keep your eye out for in the future.

How Hardt weaves the past with the present, while keeping the reader guessing about the secrets the brothers barricade from others, is flawless."~Heroes & Heartbreakers

10 stars!
By Chelsi Davis
This book has been on my tbr list for months and I finally broke down. This book is beautifully written, well structured, and well developed.
Talon is a marine veteran with secrets and damage going back to way before his time in Iraq. His sister Marj and his brothers are determined to get him help, but his help came in the form of Marj's best friend Jade.

Without giving too much away, simply put this book is a must read and I am truly looking forward to book 2! It ends with a huge cliffhanger!

Annoyed

Cliffhangers and grammatical errors annoy me. Even when I'm curious about this big secret trauma, its not enough to keep me reading.

JUST DON'T!!
By Amazon Customer
I can not believe this series received so many five star rating! Who ever compared this to Fifty Shades obviously never read that book or series. Do yourself a favor and DON'T get sucked in.

With all of the great ratings, I bought Craving. The Steel Brothers Saga, I thought three brothers, three books. OH NO!! Three books for ONE story, and I HATE HATE HATE books that end in cliffhangers,
but I continued thru all three to finish a book I started, THEN book 3 ends leaving you hanging!!

NO WAY will I buy 9 books at this price to get one complete story.

A year ago, Moon Szuzman had a life-changing encounter with three cowboys out on the range of the Flying D ranch. It promised to become something forever, but when they returned to civilization, everything went crazy. A freak fire plunged the men into nonstop work yet caused Moon to lose her job. Needing employment, she took another in LA, leaving her family, the men and Daly far behind.

Now returning for vacation, she finds three determined cowboys ready to do anything to convince her stay. She agrees to a fling—and only a fling—unsure they’ll want her once they learn her secrets. She soon finds herself roped by the team she left behind, and that team isn’t willing to let her go without a fight.

Note: The original encounter between these four is contained in the short story, One for the Team, however Roped by the Team is a standalone book that can be enjoyed without reading the original work.

If you liked the Daly series, you will love this book. Yes the lovin was hot, very hot, and you are left wanting more. I can not wait until the next book in the series comes out. You want to findout how the wedding goes, and what happens with Cord and Sully. I loved this book.

Brynn Paulin, great story telling...
By D.Hart, RCIS
Brynn Paulin, great story telling...! Moon finds herself back home and her men still want her ! Good story with plenty of suspense. Hot romance and sexy lovin' amidst the arson fires on the huge ranch. The vilian is found out and dealt with. I don't mind the M/M action, because it's well done and is at a minimum. Moon finds her happy ending. Good series, and the Daly way is the only way. ENJOY !

It's not just sheet music, but a 48 page course in Boogie Woogie piano
By Frank Beeckman
The author, Sharon A. Pease (1903-1959) attended the American College of music in Chicago and began teaching there in 1934. He composed music and wrote a monthly column for "Downbeat Magazine", discussing the biography and piano style of famous pianists that he interviewed. He also wrote a monthly column in jamboree magazine showing how to play chords. He opened his own Studio of Modern Piano in 1939. In Phoenix, he opened Keynote Music Distributors, selling phonograph records with major labels. He sometimes used the pseudonym Yardley Yates because he didn't want his students to know that he wrote "party songs" Several of his songs were recorded. He also wrote the instruction books: "Boogie-Woogie Fundamentals" (1940), "Boogie-Woogie Piano Styles No. 1" (1940) ("The history, development and art of playing the boogie woogie style") and "Boogie-Woogie Piano Styles No. 2" (1943),"88 Keys to Fame," "Styles of Famous 88'ers," "Sharon Pease Easy Block Chords", and "Sharon Pease 3 in 1 Piano Folio."

Boogie-Woogie Piano Styles No. 1 has 48 pages. It was used at Columbia University in New York to teach their students the Boogie Woogie. This book starts with a brief history about the Boogie Woogie. It then describes the styles of Meade Lux Lewis, Albert Ammons, Pete johnson and Mary Lou Williams. It continues with the basic forms of the Boogie. It gives you 25 Boogie styles in the key of C. It ends with the walking bass, and it's application to a twelve measure theme from the composition "Flinging A Whing-Ding" in the key of G. There are no fingerings.

Verdict:
Sharon Pease became an authority on Boogie Woogie. I have rated tons of Boogie Woogie books. This book is one of the better ones, but it's not for the absolute beginner.
