Magic Breaks (Kate Daniels), by Ilona Andrews

In the latest novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews, no matter how much the paranormal politics of Atlanta change, one thing always remains the same: if there’s trouble, Kate Daniels will be in the middle of it…

As the mate of the Beast Lord, Curran, former mercenary Kate Daniels has more responsibilities than it seems possible to juggle. Not only is she still struggling to keep her investigative business afloat, but she must now deal with the affairs of the Pack, including preparing her people for attack from Roland, a cruel, ancient being with godlike powers.

As Roland’s long shadow looms ever nearer, Kate is called to attend a gathering of leaders from Atlanta’s supernatural factions. When one of the Masters of the Dead is found murdered by a shapeshifter, Kate is given less than twenty-four hours to hunt down the killer. And this time, if she fails, she’ll find herself embroiled in a war that could destroy everything she holds dear…

I Laughed, I was Amazed and I Can't Wait For The Next One - Things Are Changing
By Douglas C. Meeks
OK, I am tired of typing "The best one yet" on every one of these Kate Daniels reviews so just act like I never said that ...... again.

I loved this book, it starts out with a bit of a character guide including a bit of info on who they are and what part they play/played. Then there is a bit of a "the story up until now" in a narrated Chapter 1 and combined with the detailed character guide which is written in such a manner as to be part of the story it is a unique and exceptional way to catch us all up without the chore of rereading past books, wonderfully done and make me wonder "why doesn't everybody do this?".

OK, assuming you read Magic Rises (and if you have not then you need to stop and read it before you go any farther) you know that a ton of stuff hit the fan last book and there are debts to be paid, blood to be shed and my revenge junkie is almost in a coma from all the ecstasy of his drug of choice.

Roland is coming but first she has to head off Hugh (who really needs killing) who is now trying to start a war with The Pack and that is just not going to happen if Kate has anything to say about it. Curran is off on a mission and not here to advise her so Kate tried to handle things in her own unique fashion, start the fun-o-meter.

The thing about these novels is that there is always a main plot and several very interesting secondary plots going, all of which lead to a great reading experience, the same applies to this book, we know Roland is coming (yes we will get to meet him), we know Kate has to do something about Hugh, let us not forget a date she has promised Hibla (revenge junkie is really cheering about this one), the Alpha of Clan Wolf needs to be replaced and is causing problems, throw in a couple more small plots and you have a very busy book. I was really too sick to be reading during this time but once I started it was impossible to put it down.

The fact that with all the plots and violence going around, one of the things I will always remember and reread is Kate purchasing a donkey, no way I can explain it to you, it actually caused me physical pain to read it since I was laughing so hard.

That is why these books are always auto-buys for so many of us, there is no other Kate/Curran clone to read. There are other great stories and other great authors but there is only 1 Kate Daniels and she is just another heroine without Curran to balance her out, together they are always exceptional and unstoppable. In this one Kate is really becoming the unstoppable force we always wanted her to be, you will love it.

Bottom Line: Exceptional as always, plots that never go exactly the way you thought, stories that bring it home to the reader in emotional ways that only great writing can do, no 2 dimensional characters you love them all. This is a series many of us had to struggle through the first two books because there was so much there but almost all of us were hooked for life by the end of book 3, this is another breaking point in the series, not really sure where it goes from here but I can already see it will never be dull or lackluster, 5 Stars only because they don't allow more, well done once again Ilona and Gordon. I can't wait to see where this goes.

NOTICE: There is a very good short story about Julie at the end of the book, it is exceptional and I think may contain some future characters for this series or maybe a new one.

AHHH-MAZING! So much happens in this book, loose ends are tied up, new beginnings, big scares, big cries, big laughs, Mutant donkeys? That section was so hilarious I caught myself smiling so much my cheeks hurt as I was reading. Derek and Ascanio are awesome together, throw in Desandra and you have a full comic tour. I can totally see why some thought it felt like a series ender, though. So much happens and so much is settled but so much is not settled. This opens so many new avenues and so much change that feasibly, this could go on for many more books, though I think they have only signed for 3 more. I don’t want to give spoilers and it is so hard to say how amazing this book is without spoilers so I will just sum up by character preview. No plot description because you’ve already read those. Just the plain facts.

Barabas....scribe loyale. Love him.
Desandra...best character addition to date
Ascanio...poor baby, poor stupid, beautiful baby
Derek...finally getting to see some humor again
Doolittle.....you're forgiven.
Ted Moynahan... did NOT see that coming. What an idiot. Hugh’s right on that one.
Mauro.. good stand brotha!
Jennifer...HA! comeuppance defined.
Naeeemah...WHAT THE????
Christopher....PHEW!!
Robert....torn between respect for his honesty and smacking him in the face
Hugh...bastard...just....NO.
Slayer...I actually cried.
Sarrat... I actually cheered.
Zemi Ammit. Did not see that one coming either. WOW!
Hibla....revenge is a dish best served cold
Voron...sayonara and good riddance
Ghastek...I have been hoping and waiting and biting my nails to the quick to see how he would react. Priceless. Ut-ter-ly priceless. His story is so sad. I’ve always liked him and this hooked me a little more.
ROLAND...total game changer. O.M.G. If Kate grows into only half his power, with Curran by her side, they will be unstoppable.
Curran... Always, As you wish with Curran. Through thick and thin, ultimatum or not he will always be there for her. He replaces her mother and her father, sisters brothers, friends, all the people that should have been there for her that were not, her most trusted confidant. “He will come for me.” He’s just the best. THE best.

I am so happy for Kate I can hardly see straight. And though I can NOT wait for the next book, waiting for this one nearly killed me, I can wait patiently because this book was so fulfilling and so action packed and so thorough in the loose end tying that it’s OK. Well, maybe it will be OK. I will tell you in 6 months. I’m still reeling, going back in for a second and maybe even a third reading! WOW, just WOW!! Love, love, love this book. Someone mentioned that you had to read to book 3 to get into this series. Not me. I was hooked from the first knife throw that pinned Ghastek’s the vamp to the ceiling. This series is the best there is, there is no other as good, not even close. There are characters I love as much, Mercy, Sookie until book 9, Katniss, Rachel Morgan, but no other books that I wait so impatiently for. No other author writes like this, this action packed with so much emotion and so little filler. The thought that goes into every little detail, every minute little thing, that comes to pass and how they come together at the most appropriate times, so intricately weaved, it’s just amazing. I have read these books countless times and I never got bored, I never skim, I get new tidbits every read. This series is just the best there is and it keeps on getting better, which is so rare! Thank you so much Illona Andrews for Kate Daniels! Thank you!

I love this! Best in the series!
By BookGeek
I’m going to try my best to write a serious review with a minimum amount of gushing, but it will be hard, because I absolutely loved this book.

It was just every single thing I love about urban fantasy. Action packed with magic and magical creatures. It was funny and sad and filled with romance. A roller coaster of emotions that took me on a wild ride, so, yes I am going to attempt not to gush, but guys it’s going to be hard.
Kate Daniels is an investigator by day, consort to the Beast Lord by night and magic user extraordinaire at every other available moment, at least she’s trying to be. Her merc status is in jeopardy as her company Cutting Edge is struggling, the pack is always in constant drama and her magic doesn’t seem to be progressing as quickly as she would like. Add to that the knowledge that her father undoubtedly knows of her existence and you have one stressed out Beast Lady.

Magic Breaks begins very much business as usual. Kate is on yet another ridiculous mission, and the pack has yet another problem that needs Curran’s attention. I have to say that the entire set up of the beginning worried me. First, there’s a letter from the authors promising that this is not the end of the story(like whoa why did we need that stress), then a trope is used that I very much hate, because it separates me from beloved characters…
But, then it happens. In the middle of the conclave between the Pack and the People, all hell breaks loose. Literally, the character that I would akin to the devil walks in and brings hell with him! Then the plot does not stop. I would call this probably the most action packed of the entire series. It just doesn’t stop or slow down. Our heroes are in constant danger and battle. They face impossible odds and still somehow keep swinging.

Exhilarating. Magic Breaks is exhilarating.
Kate Daniels is a series which means the authors are taking us on a journey. One of the things that this novel does beautifully is remind us how far Kate has come on the journey. Not, just magically or in her relationships, but also emotionally. Kate, the character has fought for her life, killed, sacrificed, loved and lost. She is not the same character we met in Magic Bites. She is braver, stronger, more skilled and she has a lot more to loose.
Lots of names from the past, enemies from prior books and even locations are visited from earlier installments. We are reminded how and why she met Curran, her Merc past with Jim and even easier days with Derek. These blasts from the past are important to the journey and makes the way that she needs Curran even more beautiful.

I love Kate and Curran’s relationship. Sure, all the getting together, cook for me in your underwear stuff was hilarious and fun, but them as a couple have a certain kind of magic. I don’t give a damn what happened in Magic Rises, Kate and Curran are the bees knees and I love them together. I love that they understand each other’s violence. I love that they don’t shy from a fight and that they don’t back down. I love that they both know that the other would tear the world apart in search of them. I love their unwavering faith and loyalty to each other that they have in this installment. It was hard won and even harder fought, but they have reached a place of absolute trust that is startlingly beautiful.

I also love that no matter how badass Kate is, she needs him. I love that it doesn’t weaken her or push any kind of anti-feminist ideal, because we all need someone and also, Curran needs her, too.

They are so fantastic together and honestly if after this installment you refuse to forgive him for Magic Rises…then I shall simply ignore you and assume you are fool. (Yup, I said it) I love this book. I love it and I love Kate and Curran.
Besides the action and the drama, you will also get to know Ghastek better which is fun. We also spend a roller coaster ride with the alphas of clan rat, which is great because we know literally nothing about clan rat. We get to see magic work in new and wondrous ways and we get to really glimpse into the magical world outside of the norm. Basically, we get to see the world Kate has been preparing to face.

Every single fan of this series has been waiting for the moment where Kate looks into the face of her father, the all powerful Roland. Don’t you worry, I won’t tell you the hows, where’s or why’s. What I will say is that I was not disappointed. In fact, I truly commend Ilona Andrews for the work they did in building up to Roland over the entire series and somehow making him everything one would expect and yet so much more.

Kate Daniels has been training her entire life in order to kill her father. Roland is so powerful he has been considered a god and he is the force behind the People, aka the humans who pilot vampires like they are vehicles. The question has always been…is she powerful enough to defeat him?We get the answer in Magic Breaks and it is as terrifying as it is interesting. I am obsessed with getting my hands on the next book, because really the conclusion of this book is brilliant.
It sets up everything that we love about the series and yet it’s a whole new world. I am always apprehensive when a series goes beyond five books. It always stretches the story and is filled with fillers. In order to prevent that, Ilona Andrews blew the Kate Daniels world as we know it, wide open.

It honestly astounds me that the authors that are Ilona Andrews can pack so much intensity into a book and still have time for humor. Honestly, I am stunned. I was emotional. Heartbroken, stressed, fearful and on the edge of my seat…and still, I laughed. Or smiled. This one book encompasses why I love fantasy. You get transported into a world beyond your greatest dreams and yet you get to feel every single human emotional, possible.
I want more. I want it all. And I want it now.
